Gibraltar has a perfectly beautiful main square where you can people watch, have a drink, a bite to eat, and do a bit of shopping. Its beautiful in the summer where you can sit outside at one of the many cafes drinking your sangria whilst getting a tan! Pure bliss!
But at New Year, instead of following in the footsteps of those in Madrid, or in Edinburgh where they make full use of their squares to attract people for the New Year countdown, Gibraltar does nothing for its people. This could of course be down to the fact that Gibraltarians are mainly Catholic so they do tend to do a lot of things with their families. For example, they will get together around 9pm and spend the rest of the night eating and drinking and then after midnight, they'll head off into town to see their friends. It was however totally different this year!
I was invited round to a friend's house for the usual get together at around 10pm. We did the drinks and the eating business, and then just before midnight, we switched on the tv..usually I'll have you know, we switch onto Madrid as the atmosphere there in the main square is awesome, but this time I was surprised to see them tuning into our very own Gibraltar TV station(where I used to read the news!). I was shocked to see the amount of people down at Casemates Square all gearing themselves up for the New Year bells!
Due to Gibraltar being British for 300 years this year, they had celebrations throughout the year and having a live band (getting back to the tip Im supposed to be writing about!)was just one of the numerous things they decided to do! So of course the square was jam packed! It was 'mucho' fun!

There's several good bars, pubs and a few clubs in the mainstreet of Gibraltar town. And do expect to find more English beer than any thing else there;)!
People are very open and friendly. There's a mix of Spaniards and English which gives the place a very particular atmosphere of Spanish openness and English warm humor.
Dress Code:
Relaxed and comfortable.
