A couple of years ago me and my friend Mike went up the Rock in the cable car and then walked southwards down the uppermost road. Partway along we branched off onto a path that wound its way along the almost sheer knife edge at the top. Along the way we came to an old Battery and you could go in one side and come out on the other side of Gibraltar, literally on the edge of the cliff looking hundreds of feet down to Sandy Bay.
I went back last year with my family and Christanne+Kareem who live in Gib. They said they had never been there before but then most GIbraltarians rarely go up the rock themselves. I think at this point and a little higher up on O'Hara's Battery is where you get the best views. From here Gibraltar looks huge and you get a real sense of it being a mountain and rising out of the sea thousands of years ago

STRAIT OF GIBRALTAR
Is the narrow tongue of water between Spain and Africa (see photo) that connects the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Measures: 32 miles (51 kilometers) long and 8 to 23 miles (13 to 37 kilometers) wide. Cape Trafalgar in Spain and Cape Spartel in Tangier mark its western limits; its eastern limits are the British overseas territory of Gibraltar and Point Almina in North Africa.
You can see it clearly in the way between Tarifa and Algeciras, in the 'Mirador', by the road.

this was the view from top of the cliff towards the distinctively familiar pointed section of
"the rock " in 1986 .
