Cork's Wine Bar: Great coffee

by katepj

Spacious, wooden floors, relaxing - but I went in the morning so who knows later on. Seemed to be full of people having informal meetings over coffee - me too! OK I have to confess I only had the coffee (espresso). But I am picky about coffee and it was so good I had another one which I hardly ever do. Good flavour and nice and creamy. I note it used to have a food award, (Silver), not sure if that still applies.

Lord Nelson Casemates: Lord Nelson hangout

by angiebabe

Pub restaurant done up with being on a ship theme - in particular Lord Nelsons ship at the Battle of Trafalgar which happened near the entrance of the Straits of gibraltar - clouds on the ceiling and windows done up etc - all rather effective giving a rather different ambience. Staff were fairly helpful - particularly when i cant decide what to choose from a rather interesting selection on the menu! - in recommending choice dishes.Often theres live music too, especially in the summer evenings.open for lunch and evening meals till late right in the busy centre of Gibraltar is an ideal place to head for and try. I had the mussels in white wine which were recommended in the lonely planet guidebook and also by the staff - having done Brussels and its mussels fairly often i wish i had tried else such as the very tempting sounding Fresh Fillet of Duck breast but with Fresh Fillet of Beef and...

Gatsbys: Amazing Popeye Spinach

by helem

The menu is amazing, it's in sections... French, Indian, Mexican, Burger, Italian (The French bit covers the delicious steaks). And there's a different specials menu every week.I am in the Navy and have eaten in many restaurants all over the world. This place has to rank as one of the best. Everything is fresh and tastes wonderful. I have been there several times with different friends and once they have been, they always want to go back the next night to try something different! The house wine is gorgeous too.... Red and White! Popeye Spinach is a starter, I'm not that mad on spinach but this dish is just GORGEOUS!! Top tip though, you might want to get one to share as it's quite a large portion.

Gauchos: A taste of Argentina in Europe

by sugarpuff

The following is printed on all 'Gauchos' menus as a brief history to the area. I thought it was really interesting and that you might enjoy reading all about it."Dining at 'Gauchos' offers you the rare experience of enjoying a fine repast inside a two hundred year old casemate. The Waterport Casemates are part of a fortified wall built in the early 19th century to protect the 'waterport' entrance to the town of Gibraltar. The Oxford Dictionary describes a casemate as an "embrasured room in thickness of a fortress wall." The embrasures being the openings from which the guns and cannon could be fired. Before land reclamation the main water entrance to the town of Gibraltar was through the Waterport Gates, outside the southern entrance to the restaurant. In those days, the waters of the harbour lapped against Waterport Wharf, which is where the restaurant is situated today. The other main...

Gauchos: The newest restaurant to hit The Rock with style!

by sugarpuff

Could this be labelled as barbeque? Im not quite sure...more 'grill' than barbeque I think. This restaurant opened when I was back in Gib in July 2006 by my old boss from 'The Tunnel' Restaurant in Casemates. He is truely an entrepreneur, opening a handful of places since he first arrived on The Rock back in the late 80s. And this latest one is something very different for the people of Gibraltar, and for the first few days that I helped out, it was booked solid with very good feedback. So if you're looking for a good steak place, fresh chargrilled vegetables, fresh fish and delicious desserts, not to mention the 72 bottele wine list, try this place for something different to the usual Gibraltar fare.I wrote an article for 'The Gibraltar Magazine' when I was home too about Gauchos, and it will be going to print in the September issue. If you would like to read it, please log on to...

Simon's Lovely - the Wife is Hell

by deaky

We booked at Simon's for 6 Adults (1 Veggie) and 2 Kids - Oh boy what a mistake! It started when we arrived and it was like the inside of fridge! - air conditioning on way too high - my Mum asked the waitress (turned out to be Simon's wife) if it could be turned down and was basically told that it suited her like that and No! - we should have left at this point! Menus arrived - no veggie stuff - big fuss over that one and she was so obviously anti-kids. Anyway ordered and main course arrived - not bad food - but the waitress (wife) produced to tell me kids off three times - hello! - can honestly say the boys were beautifully behaved - the tellings off were for 1) Touching the blade of his knife - big lecture about cut finger and proceeded to show us her lovely bandage - urgh! 2) My other son getting up to go to the toilet and his chair scraped on the floor and caused a noise! 3) Youngest...

Nunos: Italian with a view

by Gillybob

Nunos is situated in the Caleta Hotel in Catalan Bay with great views out over the Mediterranean. The food was great and good sized portions at very reasonable prices for a hotel restaurant. Definitely would re-visit! Tagliatele with salmon and dill

The Clipper: A wide variety

by bugalugs

We visited this bar/restaurant last year when we went to Gibraltar, enjoyed it and returned again this year.A nice varied menu and prices are reasonable.TV's dotted about the place.Staff were very nice.As it is on a narrow lane there is not a seating area outside.Visited here again in June 2005 and November 2005 and we are never disappointed.I think a lot of people who visit Gibraltar especially the day trippers tend to walk straight up Main Street and eat along there somewhere instead of nipping down the little alleys. If you visit Gibraltar try the Clipper. We have had various meals here, pasta, fish, chicken all of which were very good. The meals here are real value for money. One evening I didnt feel hungry enough to warrant ordering a meal so had a bowl of soup with crusty bread and it was lovely.Breakfasts here can be purchased all day and I think about £3.95 which is very good...

The Little Rock: Lovely meals

by bugalugs

We ate at this restaurant sitting outside in Casemates square although there are plenty of tables inside as well.We returned to this restaurant yet again on our November 2005 visit. However we sat inside as it was rather chilly outside. In fact Manchester United were on the tv screen so we watched that as we ate our meal.Portions are very big here and I was glad I hadnt had a starter as I would never have managed to eat a main course also. Its just a suggestion but if you do fancy a starter and there are two of you, then share. I had chicken fajitas which cost £8.25 and my husband had steak which was about £12.00.The prices arnt particularly cheap but the meal was really nice. However you dont have to eat, on our last visit we just sat and had a cool drink.
