Dolphins and killer whales!
  • Tip Rating:
  • There are a few companies that do dolphin tours. One of them advertises that you can even touch the dolphins. They recommend reservations as only 12 are allowed on each trip. It is on a catamaran. There is also a glass bottom in part of the boat so you can see under the water.
Apparently you can see common dolphins, bottle nosed dolphins and striped dolphins, and on rare occasions it has been known to see killer, minky and sperm whales.
Excursions last 1.1/2 hours and the cost is Adults: £25.00, children under 12 years is £12.00.

They advise you wear swim wear as you can dangle your feet over the edge and thats when the dolphins come up to you.

    Fishing
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you are an angler Gibraltar is purported to be a great place for fishing. Not that I know anything about it.
When we were at Europa point, on both occasions men were fishing there from the rocks.
There are fishing trips as well that can be obtained from different companies.
Some of the fish in these waters are sole, different kinds of bream, bass, morray and conga eels and mackerel.
There are two tackle shops in the town.
Some companies that do fishing trips are:-
    Jalex Telephone - No. 350 78468
    Lady Rose - 56571000
    Straits Fishing - 5727400
    The Angling Centre - 350 74537
I think because of the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean meeting up here in the straits of Gibraltar it has so many different species of fish.

The picture is of koi carp in a pond in the Botanical Gardens, as I am not a fisherman myself :-)

    Down with the fishes!
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you like diving then there are a few different companies that do this in Gibraltar. It isnt something I would personally like, I like my head above water not under!
There are over 40 sites for diving around Gibraltar, some sunken vessels and some that have been sunk on purpose. Some of the fish you can see are mullet, conga eels, sardines, mackerel octopus and spider crabs to name a few.
    There are even night dives.

You can take your own equipment or it is also for sale and for hire. Teaching courses are also available.

    Dolphin Trips
  • Tip Rating:
  • When we visited this time, we were approached by a man from one of the companies that offer Dolphin Trips. He said the price was now £20 but also said that it was on special offer that day for £18.
Perhaps it best to check out the other companies before deciding on which you want to take and which is the best buy.
There are a few of these down by Marina Bay.

    Canoeing on Catalan Bay
  • Tip Rating:
  • At the Northern End of Catalan Bay, on the East side of Gib there are Canoes for rent. I think its something like £6 for an hour. They are really fun but its best not to go out too far, i.e. past the buoys because there are always speedboats going past. Also its best to stay in the Bay and not go too far past the Caleta Palace or towards Eastern Beach.

    All equipment is supplied

    Sailing Regatta
  • Tip Rating:
  • Gibraltar holds a sailing regatta each year around the 3rd week of July. Over 50 yachts of different classes compete and there is also a 'Round th Rock Race'. It is held over 2 days.

    Cycling in Gib and beyond
It's easy to cycle round Gib - just like it's easy to walk round. Although the roads are narrow, drivers are normally considerate, and there are quite a few commuter cyclists, so whatever your choice of cycling you will not be alone. And you will probably be faster than everyone else.

Even better if you are coming from Spain with a bike as you will not have huge frontier delays. Plus when cycling in Spain, most drivers are rather more cyclist aware these days. There is a new law in Spain that says vehicles must leave 2m when overtaking a cyclist. Very good news for cyclists and does make cycling more pleasant up and down the coast and country roads of Andalucía.

Gib has its own cycling association, 'phone number below.

If you like cycling you'll know what to bring. I don't know where the nearest hire shops are, but I will find out.

If you are cycle-camping, there are good sites in Spain at La Casita (north of San Roque), Algeciras, and lots at Tarifa.

All are within easy reach of Gib - even for me! Don't forget your mobile - all cyclists in Spain always carry them, just in case there are any problems, or they need to help another cyclist, or anyone really.

    Warm water
If / when I get around to learn to suba I would love to practise my 'new' sport in GIB.

Well one could relax on the beach go swimming; sailing, fishing and hire a car and go for a drive into Spain.
