The Rock of Gibraltar

Spend a day walking around the top of 'The Rock'. There's a lot to see up there and the views across to Africa are stunning.
I went up on the cable car (see later section for details) and walked down at the northern end later in the afternoon. There are other ways to visit; hiring a car or taking a mini-bus seemed to be popular. The car won't take you far though... where the apes seem to gather there is massive congestion. It's easier to walk!
There are several other attractions on The Rock besides the views. They include:
St. Michael's Cave;
O'Hara's Battery;
The Great Siege Tunnels;
The Military Heritage Centre;
City Under Siege;
The Moorish Castle.
If you pay one pound more for the cable car you get a ticket that gives you 'free' entrance into all these attractions. Otherwise you have to pay to visit each one.
O'Hara's Battery was disappointing and it was a bit of a waste of energy walking up to see it. St. Michael's Cave is worthwhile, as are the Great Siege Tunnels. The Military Heritage Centre is small, but informative and the City Under Siege is worth a look around, though it seems a bit neglected. The Moorish castle wears its battle scars and inside it is quite incongruous; a good example of how Spain's Muslim rulers showed their flare for beautiful interior design!
Above everything though it is the stunning views of Andalucia's coastline and that of Morocco and the cloud capped and startlingly towering Atlas Mountains across the straits that really attract one to the top of The Rock.
The views... enjoy them over a snack and a cup of coffee!

Dolphins of Gibraltar

Here's your chance to get really close to the dolphins of the sea. Due to the geographical location of the bay, a huge population of happy dolphins live here, waiting for the dolphin watching boats to show up, so that they can come and play a bit.
Chance to see dolphins is 100%. In fact there are hundreds of them, and they are just as curious as you!

Taxi tour.
Probably the best way to see the sites is by taxi. They start to accost you immediately upon entering Gibralter (from Spain). DO NOT TAKE THESE TOURS!! They cost about 30 Euros more than if you found another somewhere in the city. You should not pay any more then 25 Euros per person for a tour that lasts about 2 hours. They take you to all the tourist spots in an air-conditioned taxi van and give you a basic history lesson as well. There is not that much to actually see in Gibralter and you could cover it all in a day. Good thing too, it's VERY expensive there. They use British pounds not the Euro.
You must make sure to see the Barbary apes. They are scattered all over the 'rock' and will jump on your head for a nice little photo-op if they think you have food. They are accustomed to people so you can get very close to them.

ROCK TOUR BY TAXI
If you leave the car in Spain, a Taxi Tour is a good way to have a quick first impression of the Rock's Main Highlights. Take the taxis just by the border, as you pass the controls. 7 pounds per person, minimum 4 persons.
You'll see:
- The Great Siege Tunnels.
- The Moorish Castle.
- St. Michael's Cave.
- The Apes (take care with the cameras).
- Europa Point.
- The Coastal Guns.

Yes, go SIGHTSEEING.

In order to enjoy Gibraltar to the fullest, may I recommend that you take the Rock Tour (lasting 90 minutes) either via coach or cab. Included in the tour are visits to the:-

(a) Nature Reserve with St Michael's Cave.

(b) Apes Den.

(c) The Great Siege Tunnels (an optional excursion)

(d) Europa Point with its panoramic views of the Strait, Europe and Africa.

(e) The Town Center.

Other note-worthy sights worth seeing here also include:

(1) The Gibraltar Museum.

(2) The Moorish Castle.

(3) The Military Heritage Center.

(4) The Shrine of Our Lady of Europe.

(5) 100 Ton Gun
.... etc.

Wow... so many things to see... make sure you allocate some time to see all these great sights!

You must take a Rock Tour and visit the Barbary apes. Our guide would assist with getting a semi-wild ape on your shoulder for a picture....

My wife really enjoyed visiting the apes! She's not crying.... she's laughing!!

Funny thing.... she's been going through a lot of shampoo.....

This is another popular tourist attraction there are a large population of wild dolphins in the Bay of Gibraltar. You can take this boat trip to see them live and play in the Mediterranean sea.

We had a great tourguide who had all kinds of information to share regarding the history of Gibraltar. We saw all the sites in an efficient manner, for a reasonable price. Highly recommended.
