On the Spanish side of the frontier whilst in the car queue it is known that some persons approach tourists selling them tickets to enter/drive into Gibraltar. This is a CON, you only need your passport to enter Gibraltar and you do not have to pay a single penny to enter/drive.

it can be a long wait within the border queue anything up to an hour or more on occasions ,we have lived here for several months now and its become a way of life.

Unique Suggestions: if travelling by car to gibraltar make sure you have lots of stuff to do for the kids like snacks and books etc as it can be a long wait at the checkpoint.

Fun Alternatives: theres no alternative for it im afraid you must pass through the border control to get either in or out of gib ...sorry !!

leave your car in spanish side....
no problem at all to cross the border to gibraltar....but ,FROM gib, filing out WITH CAR needs from ONE TO THREE HOURS!

even if great britain and spain share same point of view about war! (irak, april 2003)

Fun Alternatives: no problem at all crossing the border on foot...from or to gib!
take doubledecker bus 10 (departures each 15 min) to the route end and
ask for return ticket,in euros or pence,as you want!

when starting, have a look to the very special LEVEL CROSSING!

There is usually a long queue waiting to get into Gibraltar and we were approached several times and told we could purchase parking/visa passes to save time. The guys all had plastic 'ids' and charged 2000pst. Sadly, we fell for this !

DO NOT PAY ANY MONIES TO ENTER GIBRALTAR ON THE SPANISH SIDE, MAINLY WHEN ENTERING BY CAR.
THERE'S A CABLE CAR BUT BEWARE OF A HELL OF A LOT OF WALKING UP AND DOWN HILLS TO COVER ALL THE SIGHTS.
MAKE SURE TO VISIT THE UPPER NATURE RESERVE HOWEVER YOU GO BECAUSE IF NOT IT'S LIKE NOT COMING HERE.

Bear in mind that crossing back into Spain with your (hire) car often takes a long time and late in the afternoon queues very quickly form. The Spanish passport control is often very slow and you could be hours waiting. So be patient and make sure you have plenty to drink with you, as it can get very hot in the car.

Please when travelling from Spain into Gibraltar by car you will most likely be approached by bumbs telling you that you have to pay to get into Gibraltar. This is not true. Remember that under the EU such prohibitions on the movement of labour would be prohibited. Tell them that you live in Gibraltar and are not going to pay any such fees. (You may see them putting little pieces of paper on cars signifying that a person paid the fee to get into Gibraltar) While in may be the case that such fees are generally prohibited, the SPanish government has no problems in slowing your reentry back into Spain. My wife and I spent a good hour waiting to get back. I am sure that is a relatively short time from what I have read. Many people have suggested parking on the outside (Spain) and walking across the border. There are busses that pick people up and take them around Gibraltar. The only problem that I see with this is that the Spanish city outside of Gibraltar is very poor, and from what I have read crime is very high.
