Overviw of Gibraltar

by gauravks

Gibraltar is an amazing place. Just 7 miles of property, and something for everyone, with most of it steeped in history. The beauty of the area can’t be denied and for that reason alone, if no other, a trip to Gibraltar should be in your plans for a holiday. The culture of Gibraltar reflects Gibraltarians' diverse origins. While there are Spanish and British influences. The Rock of Gibraltar is located at the entrance of the Mediterranean. Its strategic location and history have made it an international symbol of solidity and strength, and its name frequently features in the world press and media. Day, as a self-governing British Overseas Territory the locally elected Government of Gibraltar has created a solid and diverse economy. In a modern Europe, this has its base in offshore finance, shipping, tourism, and the Internet rather than the historic military past. There is, however, much...

Pounds - but not as you know them!

by Gillybob

Don't forget, your very nicely coloured Gibraltar notes and Gibraltar coins are not legal tender back in the UK. Use them up before returning - make sure your mates don't go paying in English tender if you've still got Gibraltar money to get rid of!!!

St Michael's Cave you wish you could be trapped

by EdinburghRoc

St Michael's Cave is Wonderful it would indeed be wonderful to be trapped here when a classical peace of music is being played.Concerts take place often I was told. Try and find out if any concerts etc are taking place and go!It's magical visiting but must be wonderful to be there when a concert is taking place. The caves are lit with coloured lights.Stalactites and stalagmites.

Africa tour

by Kova

This does not have much to do with Gibraltar, but while you are there you might be tempted to take a tour to Morroco. It is advertised through Gib and it's their tour, and just in case you might be thinking "what better time than now"- DON'T GO! I took the tour and still regret it. The day was a nightmare. The whole trip was about taking you to one of the worst places ever, to manipulate you into buying everything. And I don't mean the usual persuading and bargaing that are to be expected, this was actualy set up by the tour guy, and you do not go to the promised city until you buy something. When you are determend and say no, the tour guy will try to persuade you into it also, giving you a long lecture like you are a little spolied ritch brat how poor these people are and that it would be a right thing to do, then they get offended and pissed off. Like you haven't paid for the tour too...

A British Phone Box

by bugalugs

These red phone boxes are becoming a thing of the past, and should imagine to some they are collectors items.I couldnt resist having my pic taken in this one which is in the Botanic Gardens. I wonder how many people besides me have gone in for their picture to be taken.

A long wait!!!!

by bugalugs

Its not really a tourist trap although you do feel trapped and that is when you are queuing to get over the border. This is not when you are walking, that only takes minutes, but when you have a car. The longest time we queued was one hour and 40 minutes, seemed like a whole day!!!!! The shortest time was about 15 minutes. Queues can form because of the amount of traffic, but also when a plane is landing/taking off as you have to drive across the runway. As there are only about 3 planes a day landing here its not too much of a problem, however when we were there the Royal Air Force with about 12 of their planes were on practice flights and that was one of the main reasons for the long wait. Probably best to have a drink in the car and even something to eat.

Upper Rock Nature Reserve's Souvenir Shops

by BleedOrange

The one that I visited was outside of St. Michael's cave. The prices of the items in here are almost double what they cost in town. I bought the same decorative mug for 6 Pounds in town that cost 13 up on the rock. Buyer Beware!

Taxis AGAIN!

by freya_heaven

Just to be aware that if you you take the Taxi tour around the Rock, they dont actually take you to the top.We spoke to some people who had done the Taxi Tour, and had been told by a taxi driver that it wasnt possible to get to the top as it wasnt open to the public. If you want to go to the top (You really should) Get the vertigo inducing Cable Car, or walk up

St Michael's cave is too 'sexed up'

by sourbugger

St Michael's cave is somewhat over-hyped. If you have not been in a cave complex before it is worth the visit, but otherwise it is a bit of an anti-climax. Why not visit places that are more peculiar to gibraltar, like the siege tunnels ? Try to book in for a concert - then you can admire the space for free (apart from the cost of the performance!) Get caves out of your system elsewhere in the world.

Main Street

by mariquita

Gibraltar is very small. It has not much more than the main street. This has a fake air that does not make it worth it. It is like transporting the typical Street of a boring English town to andalusia. You better concentrate on the rock and the beautiful views of the African coast.
