Know about this?
Well having just done the crossing for me its tobacco and thats it! excepting some spirits in certain shops.
Cafe/restaurant food is absolutely over the top price wise and greatly underwhelming quality wise. Go get a fried fish just beyond Main Street near the old Military Cemetary - yes the one showing the Union Flag outside. The place is a tip charging prices making the Ritz look cheap - I paid £5.40 for a regular fish although informed that this was a ''special'' - good sense of humour or what ? was he meaning a tourist special I wonder.
Next came a £13.30 bill at a cafe for 2 toasted sandwiches (Morrisons sliced bread, Kraft cheese slices) and three cups of tea. Best about it the place was recommended by the tour guide (?)
Save your money till you get back over the border.
Overall the place has some decent old stretches and a couple of other sites (have to confess we didnt go up the rock itself) however the place is so damn built up you cant get a view of anything really unless you venture upwards. Parts of it appear very run down to be honest.
The outward Customs circus was a bit bewildering having to get off a bus walk through a building then get back on was bit farcical to say the least.
Worth a day trip but wouldnt think of spending longer there.
AN OUT AND OUT RIP OFF!!!
I've just been there, the whole place is a tourist trap! I went there while on a costa cruise and found the local people VERY unfriendly. we asked a policewoman for directions and she just shouted us "one moment!" and then she forgot about us and never gave us a reply. She seemed annoyed by the fact that we bothered her with our "stupid tourists" attitude and asked for directions. I am even thinking of writing to the Gibraltar tourist information office to complain about her.
To go to the rock it cost 14 euro return ticket but it's just a few minutes ride!!! A real rip-off!! If you share a taxi they ask you for 27 euro per person if you are less than 4 people and about 20 euro per person if you are up to 8 people in a taxi-minivan. Mind you, the minivan driver gets 160 euro from the group for a one-hour drive and fuel over there is very cheap! A rip-off!! NEVER AGAIN!!!!
Unique Suggestions: If you are stuck in Gibraltar (like I was, being on a cruise trip) try and find as many people as possible and share a taxi so the price will go down.
Time on Rock
If travelling onto Gibraltar by coach from Mainland Spain expect only 3 or 4 hours maximum staying time as coaches are not allowed to stay longer, its better to hire a car park across border and walk into Gibraltar only a short walk. and you can get around easy once across border.
Unique Suggestions: We enjoyed a demonstartion of glass blowing in the crystal glass works in the main square as you enter Gibraltar.
Fun Alternatives: Visit the Rock Apes they are worth a look at. warning though dont carry food bags or easy to grab items. they like to have a raid on the unwary. they are qrganised and even have look outs to see you come up the path.
