Women are neither allowed to visit nor reside in Hilandar, not even on the territory of Mount Athos. Empress Jelena, emperor Dusan's wife, was an exception. An outbreak of plague in the Balkans forced her to seek refuge on Athos, but she never entered Hilandar or step on Athos land. All the time, she was carried. It was in 1347 when Athos was within the boundaries of the Serbian Empire.
