    Ducks on the lake shore

At the foot of Mount Psiloriti Zaros is a fresh water lake from where much of the bottled water comes from. If you are a visitor to Crete I am sure you have drank a bottle of Zaros water. It is very picturesque up there with woodland walks. It was a sunday we went and it was also popular with the locals.. There is a taverna and a cafeteria. We ate at the tavarna and the food was delicious. On the road you will pass very traditional Cretan villages which are impressive in themselves.

Golden Beach...by Name and By Nature

This beach is a gem in the midst of package holiday madness, and nobody knows about it!!! The catch is you'll probably need a rented car to find it. We rented one the size of a shoe and went exploring and so glad we did. My advice: Get a shoe car. Cost us just 95 euro all in for a week.

You can rent a beach chair here for 3 euro a day and an umbrella for the same. The water is crystal clear and so heavenly you'll think you've died and been put out to celestial pasture. Or you can just lay on the beach and pay nothing. But the sun is so hot here it bites...and no shade. At least get yourself an umbrella otherwise you'll get a good wollop of skin cancer to go.

The dude who runs the beach chair biz not only sports some spurling diktogs he also bring you, free of charge, glasses of ice and raki and some cucumber to your beach chair. Hello drunken swimming in paradise. I'm loving it.

The water is amazing, and full of curious fish who swim around you without taking the obligitory nip from your epidermis that others pirhana like monsters are prone to do without prompting.

This little beach is worth finding. It makes it all worth it.

    some ruins

These ruins here are nothing very special, I not even know the name of them, but there are several other interesting places to be reached from Matala as for example the archeologic places of Laggou, Phaestos, Agia Triada und Gortyna.

    Aghia Galini

Aghia Galini's beach is located between the town and the river. It's a sandy beach with sunbeds, restaurant and hotel. The beach past the river to the east is a long beach with big pebbles and a rocky seabed.
