Prefecture of Arcadia

by Kuznetsov_Sergey

I passed by Arcadia along the Greek National Road 76 highway on my way from Mycenae (Argolida) to Olympia (Elia).Arcadia or Arkadía is a region of Greece in the Peloponnesus. It’s one of the 51-th prefectures of Greece and one of the 14th which I have happened to visit. My VT-page on Prefecture of Arcadia. You may see my way across Arcadia on the map.It takes its name from the mythological character Arcas. Arcadia has its present-day capital at Tripoli. It forms the largest prefecture on the Peloponnesian peninsula. We didn’t make any stop in Arcadia so I can’t advise to visit any sight there.

Prefecture of Argolida

by Kuznetsov_Sergey

Argolida is one of the 51 prefectures of Greece and one of the 14 where I have been. I came there from Isthmus (Corinthia) and went to Olympia (Elia) via Arcadia. My VT-page on Prefecture of Argolida. You may see my routs and locations on the map of Argolida. It is located in the eastern part of the Peloponnese. Most arable land lies in the central part. It is bounded by Arcadia to the west and southwest, Corinthia to the north, the Saronic Gulf, the Attica prefecture and the Troezen area to the east and southeast over water, and the Argolic Gulf to the south. Its mountain ranges include Lyrkeia and Trachy in the northwest.Official site argolida.gr.The Sanctuary of Asklepios at Epidaurus was the most celebrated healing centre of the ancient world. As one of the foundational sites of European civilization, Mycenae is a popular tourist destination less than two hours' drive from Athens. The...

Prefecture of Corinth

by Kuznetsov_Sergey

Corinthia is one of the 51 prefectures of Greece and one of the 14 where I have been. My VT-page on Prefecture of Corinth. I passed by Corinthia along the Greek National Road 8A on my way from Athens to Isthmus and further from Ishtmus to Epidaurus (Argolida). You may see my routs on the map.Corinthia is the area around the city of Corinth. Presently it is a prefecture of Greece part of the periphery of Peloponnese. It is the third-most populated prefecture on the Peloponnese peninsula and the largest in the region. The Corinth Canal, carrying ship traffic between the northern Mediterranean and the Aegean is about 4 km east of Corinth cutting through the Isthmus of Corinth. To the west of the isthmus lies the Gulf of Corinth to the east lies the Saronic Gulf. The Corinth Canal is a canal that connects the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf in the Aegean Sea. The canal is 6.3 kilometer...

Glorious Greece

by deecat

Please click photo to the enlarge mapI personally don't think that any other nation has contributed as much to world culture as Greece has. architecture, astronomy, art, medicine, mathematics, law, and literature all have "roots" going back to the ancient Greeks. Can you believe that most of the subjects that we study in our schools were 1st taught by the Greeks thousands of years ago?If you look at the map, you will be able to see all the areas that made up Greece.Traditional Thrace: It's in northeastern Greece and borders Bulgaria and Turkey. It looks more like Turkey than Greece. Thessaly: Located in central Greece, it is surrounded by mountains. Our tour guide called it "the breadbasket of Greece" because of all the crops grown on the fertile plains in the center of this province.Central Greece: There are lots of low hills and plains in central Greece, and we saw vineyards, olive...

So Much to See and Do in Thessaloniki

by deecat

Thessaloniki is comprised of an old city as well as a new city. Both are delightful. The Harbor of Thessaloniki, the Acropolis, the castle, and the ancient walls are in the old part. It has narrow, winding streets. Our bus could hardly make it down some of the streets. The picture is of the White Tower ( main bastion) which was built in the 16th century by the Turks and is located on the sea-front promenade where Jayne and I took a lovely, long walk.In Thessaloniki, we also saw the Macedonian Museum where we viewed the contents of Philip II tomb. There was a sarcophagus with marble figures all around it. They knew it was a royal grave by the 16 point star emblem. This is the second largest city in Greece with a population of 1,000,00 people and it is one of the oldest cities in Europe. It was conquered by the Turks and was liberated in October of 1912. A local man saw me taking the...

Take Time to Have Fun While Seeing the Sites

by deecat

Click to see these two "nuts" perform!Sometimes when we travel, we forget to just have fun, "let our hair down", or "clown around"! Fortunately, that was not at all true while on our tour of GREECEHere in Delphi at the 4th century theatre, my sister-in-law and Mrs. Neel stood on the "stage" and sang at the top of their lungs, "The Sound of Music". It proved that the acoustics were great! This theater is sometimes called the Parthenon Stage. The large stadium was famous for its chariot races. This smaller theater was known for its music and dance. Both are well preserved. The laughter that rings out in the theater as these two "nuts" sing is unforgettable...that's what makes a trip worth remembering.

Sad Fact: Much of Greek History is in England

by deecat

One sad fact that I learned in Greece, and especially while in Delphi, is that much of the antiquity of Greece is now in England. For instance, the frieze of the treasury of the Athenians is now in the archaeological museum of England along with many artifacts from the site including the omphalos, the sculptured cone that stood in the exact center of the world, and the famous bronze statue of the Charioteer, one of the most celebrated pieces of the ancient art in the world. How very sad that the Greeks have to go to England to see their own history and art.The picture is of my sister-in-law Jayne at the Athenian Treasurey which was built in 490 B.C. Just feeling the "spirit" of all the history and myth of this wonderful place. Thank goodness, the Greek Government has the intelligence to save what is so remarkable and that it is made readily available to all of us.

Take More Pictures Than Just Momuments

by deecat

The most exciting part of Greeceb were the people, especially the older generation. To look into the faces and see the hard work, the knowledge, the experiences was fantastic. While visiting Corinth, I saw this older man who was busy cleaning the streets. He only had a rake, a broom, and an old wheel-barrow. He seemed so dignified and so proud of his job as a street cleaner. I only wish we all could show his dignity within our own lives. Most tourists did not notice him, but of all that I saw that day, I cherish that memory because he's the real Greece...the people. Each country that I visit, I try to take at least one picture of old people of that particular country. I do not know why, but I am fascinated by the older generations. Perhaps it is because I was so fond of my grandparents and still miss them today. My advice to all travelers is to take plenty of photographs of the...

Behind The Tensions Between Turks & Greeks

by deecat

Because I was traveling to both Greece and Turkey, I really wanted to know what caused the tension between the two countries. After doing some reading, I soon discovered...During the Ottoman Rule of Greece, hunger and hopelessness reined. People who came up with enough money emigrated to foreign shores. The Greeks countryside became quite empty. When the Ottoman Empire waged a long series of wars with the Italian state of Venice, Greece was often used as a battleground. The Turks ruled Greece for 400 years. On the 25th of March, 1921, a religious flag was raised, and independence for Greece was declared. That date is now celebrated as Greek Independence Day. It meant very little at the time because the Turkish army still occupied the land. It took a long, bloody war for Greece to truly win its freedom. The oklephts [Greek outlaw patriots] would attack Turkish soldier and then disappear...

First European Christians

by deecat

As I've said, the tour in Greece and Turkey was called, "Following in the Footsteps of Paul". Yet, I learned a great deal about the Greek religion. St. Paul lived and preached in Greece for many years. Philippi was the first site in Europe where he preached and set up a Christian community. He then moved on to Thessaloniki. In Athens, Paul preached from atop the Areopagus [massive stone at the base of the Acropolis]. Corinth was Paul's headquarters for more than a year.*The Greek Orthodox Church is financially supported by the Greek government, & religion is taught in the country's public schools. Our tour guide told us that in 1982 the government legalized civil marriage & relaxed strict laws concerning divorce. She also said that the Orthodox church is less important in the everyday lives of most Greeks than during the time of Turkish occupation. Church attendance has declined....
