Watch the sunset on a Greek...

by csistok

Watch the sunset on a Greek island while eating a picnic-style dinner. Some red wine, chunks of feta cheese on cucumber slices, canned Dolmas (stuffed grape leaves -- delicious!), a can of tuna, some pita bread, black olives, and some tomatoes. This was the feast we had whilst enjoying the gorgeous view from our room in Ios (see my Greece Accommodations Tips). Was the cheapest and most pleasant meal we had on the island.

Visit City of Rodos.

by Dudytka

The Orthodox cathedral of AnnunciationCity of Rodos is obviously capital of Rodos. It is the only place where you can find restaurants and cafes and clubs as you imagine them. This nice crowded town contrasts otherwise lonely island. Rodos town was the first even built on an urban plan. It's 2400 years old!! Rodos architecture was influenced by the Italian architecture of the late thirties (fascist). There is the Rodos harbor in the first picture.

One of the three parts of the City of Rodos, The Old Town of Rodos Beautiful with it's medieval buildings. I recommend going to the Archaeological Museum [tel. 0241/27.674]. It includes collections of coins, pots and sculptures from the Mycenaean up to the Roman era.

Visit Greece's Mainlands Great Historical Sights

by Paul2001

Remember not to forget the visit some of the Mainland sights such as Meteora, Monemvasia, and Mystras. Greece has a glorious if turbulent history and very interesting historical sights. Beyond the archeological sights and sea, I really enjoyed eating in Greece. Nowhere else in the world have I found so many wonderful reasonably priced restaurants.

PeloponneseThe Peloponnese,...

by karakal73

PeloponneseThe Peloponnese, Greece's southern peninsula, is rich in history and scenically diverse. Packed into its northeastern corner are the ancient sites of Epidaurus, Corinth and Mycenae, all easily reached from Nafplio. The ghostly, capacious Byzantine city of Mystras clambers up the slopes of Mt Taÿgetos, its winding paths and stairways leading to deserted palaces and fresco-adorned churches.Further south, you can explore the Mani, a region of bleak mountains and barren landscapes broken only by austere and imposing stone towers, mostly abandoned but still standing sentinel over the region. Other attractions in the region include ancient Olympia, the beautiful medieval town of Monemvasia and the thrilling Diakofto-Kalavryta rack-and-pinion railway, which rollercoasts its way through the deep Vouraïkos Gorge.

AthensAthens ranks with Rome...

by karakal73

AthensAthens ranks with Rome and Jerusalem for its glorious past, yet few fall in love with the modern city. Most visitors never see beyond the nefos (smog) and the high-rise apartment blocks built hurriedly to house the refugees who poured in from Asia Minor during the 1922 population exchange with Turkey. But beyond the off-putting veneer of concrete there is a kind of dilapidated charm. Almost every house and apartment has a balcony bulging with geraniums, and many of the city's streets and squares are fringed with orange trees. Athens is a curious blend of east and west; its raucous street vendors and colourful markets are reminiscent of Turkish bazaars, while crumbling neoclassical mansions hark back to the city's brief heyday as the 'Paris of the Mediterranean'. The Acropolis, crowned by the Parthenon, stands sentinel over Athens and is visible from almost everywhere in the city....

We have visited the island of Lesvos twice in the last 5 years. It is one of the most uncommercialised of all the Greek Islands. When visiting Lesvos you absolutely must vistit the Petrified Forest at Sigri. It is well worth a visit. What I really love about all my visits to Greece is the food. MMMMM My mouth is watering just thinking about it. More on that later.
