The Importance of Greek Mythology

by deecat

Photo is from a drawing in a mythology book I used as a teacher. The Greeks of a[pre-science] world worshiped many gods & goddesses & used myths to answer questions about the universe. One of my favorites points out how myths were used to explain what science now answers. It is the myth of the of Why We Have Changing Seasons:Long ago, Demeter (de-MEE-tur)was goddess of the harvest & watched over the land. Demeter had a lovely daughter named PersephoneHades, god of the Underworld, lived deep below the Earth, & he was lonely. One day, Hades saw Persephone working in the fields with her mother, & he immediately fell in love with her. He desired for her to become his Queen of the Underworld. So, Hades jumped into his chariot and came up through the Earth's surface, grabbed Persephone, & took her down to the Underworld.Demeter was so sad that she stopped working & ordered the Earth to stop...

Know A Little Mythology Before You Visit Greece

by deecat

I was so fortunate to have learned so much Greek and Roman Mythology by teaching it for 30+ years. I gave a "crash" course to my sister-in-law, Jayne Glass, before we left, and as we would see mythological monuments, temples, and statues. An example of the importance of some background information came up when we were on the Acropolis in Athens and saw the Temple for Athena and Poseidon. (The Erechtheion). The pictures show that Temple, which was built in 420 B.C. in the Ionic order. The main temple was divided into two sections which were dedicated to the worship of the two principal gods of Attica, ATHENA and POSEIDON -ERECHTHEUS.Athena was daughter of Zeus, and the myths say that she was born from his head and came out in full armour! Thus, she is the Goddess of both wisdom and war.POSEIDON (better known as Neptune) was Zeus's brother and was the God of the Sea and all Sea Creatures....

The New and The Old of Athens

by deecat

Most people who visit Greece on a tour or independently have Athens as the beginning or the end of their visit. This is a city that shows visitors two faces: the new and the old. There are some great positives about the modern city of Athens. I enjoyed Syntagma and Omonoia squares as well as several superb museums. It was fun to hear the university students and the Lawyers arguing politics at the park near the Syntagma Square.A working class area and a fine place to sample food sold by street vendors is Omonoia Square. [Be forewarned that this is also where 8 major streets converge.]Be sure to see Athens' National Archaeological Museum which holds more masterpieces of ancient art than any other museum in the world! But, the new face of AThens, sadly, allows us to hear the screeching of tires, the blaring of horns, and the roar of traffic. Half a million cars, buses, and trucks swarm into...

Prefecture of Fthiotida

by Kuznetsov_Sergey

Phthiotis or Fhtiotida is one of the 51-th prefectures of Greece and one of the 14-th I happened to pass by. My VT-page on Prefecture of Fthitida. You may see my way across Fthitida on the map.I passed by Fthiotida along the Greece National Road 3 on my way from Delphi (Fokida) to Meteora (Tricala) and along the Greek National Road 1 on my way from Meteora (Trikala) to Athens (Attica). The capital is the city of Lamia. It is bordered by the Maliac Gulf to the east, Boeotia in the south, Phocis in the south, Aetolia-Acarnania in the southwest, Eurytania in the west, Karditsa in the north, Larissa in the north, and Magnesia in the northeast. The name dates back to ancient times.

Parnassus Mountain

by Kuznetsov_Sergey

Walking along Montparnasse in Paris I dreamed to see the Mount of Parnassus which gave the name to the well-known district of the French capital. My dream came true!Mount Parnassus is a mountain of barren limestone that towers above Delphi and Arachova. According to Greek mythology, this mountain was sacred to Apollo, the Corycian nymphs, and the home of the Muses.Mount Parnassus is named after Parnassos, the son of the nymph Kleodora and the man Kleopompus. When we visited Arachova the Mountain was covered with clouds so we didn’t see all its beauty unfortunately.

Ionic Sea - Corinthian Gulf

by Kuznetsov_Sergey

The Gulf of Corinth is a deep inlet of the Ionian Sea separating the Peloponnese from western mainland Greece. I crossed the Gulf by the Rio-Antirio Bridge which connects Patras' easternmost suburb of Rio to the town of Antirrio, connecting the Peloponnese peninsula with mainland Greece. The Gulf is bounded in the east by the Isthmus of Corinth which includes the shipping route of the Corinth Canal and in the west by the Strait of Rion, which separates the Gulf of Corinth from the outer Gulf of Patras at Cape Drepano, where the narrowest point is crossed by the Rion-Antirio Bridge. In medieval times, the Gulf of Corinth was known as the Gulf of Lepanto.

Aegean Sea – Saronic Gulf

by Kuznetsov_Sergey

I crossed the Saronic Gulf while cruising over its islands: Poros, Hydra and Aegina. You may see my way on the map.The Saronic Gulf or Gulf of Aegina in Greece forms part of the Aegean Sea and defines the eastern side of the Isthmus of Corinth. It is the eastern terminus of the Corinth Canal, which cuts across the isthmus. Islands that are lined in the middle of the Gulf are Aegina, Salamis, and Poros along with smaller islands of Patroklou and Vleves. The origin of the name comes from the mythological king Saron who drowned at the Psifaei lake (modern Psifta). The Saronic Gulf was a string of six entrances to the Underworld, each guarded by a chthonic enemy in the shapes of thieves and bandits.

Prefecture of Viotia

by Kuznetsov_Sergey

Boeotia also Viotía is one of the 51-th prefectures of Greece and one of the 14-th I have been. I came there twice. Once from Delphi (Fokida) to Arachova. And for the second time on my way from Meteora (Trikala) to Athens (Attica). My VT-page on Prefecture of Viotia. You may see my way across Viotia on the map.It is within the Central Greece periphery and its area was known in ancient times. Its capital is Livadeia but for me it corresponds with Arachova. Its bounding prefectures are Phocis in the west Phthiotis to the north and northwest Euboea in the east via a bay and a gulf and Attica to the south.Arachova is a mountain small town next to Delphi. Its quaint houses are built up on the north slopes of Mount Parnassos. The name Arachova derives from the South Slavic words ‘ara’ and ‘hova’ which mean ‘walnut trees’ in reference to the many ones found in the area.

Tip Photo
Prefecture of Attica

by Kuznetsov_Sergey

Attica is subdivided into the prefectures of Athens, Piraeus, East Attica and West Attica. Attica includes 4 of the 51 prefectures in Greece. They are among 14 prefectures I have happened to visit and explore during my short stay in Greece. It was Attica where I started my trip and where I finished it. You may see my routs across Attica at the map. I was happy to visit Vraona, Athens, Piraeus, Poros Island, Hydra Island, Aegina Island and Sounio. My VT-page on Attica.Located in the south of the country, Attica covers about 3,800 square kilometers. In addition to Athens it contains within its area the cities of Peiraeus, Eleusis, Megara, Laurium, and Marathon, as well as a small part of the Peloponnese peninsula and the islands of Salamis, Aegina, Poros, Hydra, Spetses, Kythira, and Antikythera.
