Captain Corelli's Mandolin

by Snipernurse

If you're coming to Cephalonia, or Greece for that manner, it is a must that you read Louis De Berniere's Captain Corelli's Mandollin, an absolutely fantastic novel about WWII in Cephalonia. Truly a great read, educational and entertaining. The movie, however, does not give the story justice and should be avoided altogether.

The Dogs of Greece

by Snipernurse

Are the happiest dogs on Earth!! They are friendly (they don't so much approach you as they just flat out ignore). There was an incident in Greece's past where several shelters were exposed for abusing stray dogs, so all the stray dog shelters were shut down, leaving all the strays to fend for themselves in the streets. They quickly gained numbers at an alarming rate, alerting the government. They let the dogs remain to roam the streets, but take them all in for neutering, which is assisting in decreasing the numbers. In the meantime, they are happy and fun to watch.

A Light-hearted Look At Greek Life

by nickandchris

Whilst relaxing on holiday in Greece, most of us like to have a good book onboard.."The Greek For Love",by James Chatto is a real life tale about buying and falling in love with a ruin on Corfu and is a great read. Be prepared for sadness, however!!"It's All Greek To Me", by John Mole is about Evia and house re-building. Both books are amusing and the trials and tribulations that go with the new lives these two families lead give a good insight into village life and tell of how they finally manage to become part of the local scene. Both books are very enjoyable, I've just read them whilst on holiday in Greece this May. Read these books on holiday in Greece and you'll feel you are there with the characters.

Soulvaki/Gyro advise

by bebegringa26

I'm not sure about Mykonos but I can speak for Athens, Santorini & the Peloponnese. The cheapest meal is a soulvaki/gyro to go. Make sure you get it to go. It should only cost between 1.80-2.50 Euros. Most of the ones I ate cost me 1.80 Euros. If you eat it at the restaurant, they triple charge you and it can range from 8-12 Euros for the same meal. Crazy!! Also, you can get Panini sandwiches for a decent price like 2.50-3.50 Euros. They look like french bread sandwiches and then they press them in a sandwich presser. Those are good on the go. Sorry I can't answer your questions about the cheapest restuarants. P.S. At restaurants they charge you for bread. Usually 1.50 per person. For two that adds up. Make sure you tell them "no bread". Hope this helps!

"From the Athens Airport to the Greek Islands"!

by INSULARIUS

I would suggest not to leave the airport! The Athens International Airport is a pleasant place to spend your time: all shops, restaurants, as well as, travel agencies stay open day and night and at least, you will have a place to sit, to eat and buy your tickets.Certainly, it is not comfortable to sleep on an airport seat, but it is better than nothing!I would not suggest you to spend your night on the port of Piraeus, it is quite uggly! At around 04:00 a.m., you can catch your bus from the Airport to Piraeus. It takes one hour and a half, so you will have plenty of time to walk around and find your boat.Do not be afraid about buses: the Airport is connected to Piraeus, as well to Athens, with a continuous and efficient bus service, every 20 minutes, day and night!BUT, pay attention to your tickets, which you have to buy in advance, before your arrive in Greece, because if you buy them,...
