Ancient Messene was built in B.C.369 to defend the Messinians from the Spartans.
A very spread out site which is still being excavated.
No admission charge. It's all very laid back.
The best place to view is from the village platea in Mavromati.

Built in the Walls of Messene, guarding Ancient Messene.It's huge limestone lintel is half fallen and is an impressive sight.
It is the best preserved gate in the wall and the easiest to reach from Ancient Messene.
More impressive than Hadrian's Wall in England.
