Right after Carnival we celebrate Clean Monday in Greece. This is a religious celebration and denotes the beginning of fasting until Easter. On Clean Monday Greeks have pic nics with taramosalata, shellfish, and other fasting dishes and a large and flat bread made specially only on this particular day, called "lagana".

This is a kite flying day. Kites are seen sold and flying everywhere. A traditional kite, is made out of thin wood, coloured paper and a very long tail made out of paper strips. To fly such a kite you must be quite a master at it, but also the weather plays a major role. A slight breeze is the best. Otherwise most of them end up hanging on elecricity wires or on tree branches, torn and miserable.

    Easter's table

In Greek, Easter is called Pascha, meaning passover. It is the eternal Passover from death to life and from earth to heaven.

I was lucky to see the celebration of Easter in Greece in 2003: the procession of the "epitaphios" in Monemvassia, unforgettable customs in Leonidio on Easter's Eve and the lunch-dinner with Big Greek Family on Easter Sunday with traditional greek music and dances!!!

Do you eat to live or live to eat? Although I rather belong to the first category, in Greece I definitely shifted to the other.
Greek food - so unsophisticated but unique, and simply delicious. And it is true that it tastes best on the spot; when you come back home, equipped with Greek olive oil, feta cheese and herbs and you make Greek salad f.e., you will be surprised to find out that, though delicious, it lacks something.

Here are some dishes that I especially liked:
    - moussaka - eggplant casserole with beshamel sauce,
    - souvlaki - pieces of meat and vegetables grilled on a skewer,
    - dolmades (appetizer rather than a dish) - grapevine leaves stuffed with rice, sometimes also with meat and vegetables,
    - tzatziki - yoghurt with cucumber and garlic, used as a dip. It tastes fantastic with meat, vegetables or just bread,
    - and above all Greek salad / Horiatiki. There are many variations but its basic ingredients are: tomato, cucumber, onion, olives, feta cheese and everything is dressed with olive oil and oregano.

Greek vegetables are mostly grown outdoors, not in greenhouses, and it is the secret of their rich flavour.
As for feta cheese it may be also served cooked. I especially liked it baked in the oven with tomatoes and oregano.

Remember that Greek dishes are served warm rather than hot. Why? Perhaps hot weather doesn't agree with hot meals?

Paraphrasing a popular proverb: When in Greece, do as the Greek do. Eating is a social occasion here, so enjoy your meal in a nice company and don't forget about a glass (or more) of Greek wine.

    drink coffee and drive!
    by marka13
Greeks consider the preparation and drinking of their coffee almost holy! A bit exaggerating but true…
Greeks have a totally different point of view from Italians who invented espresso. A greek needs at least half an hour to drink his coffee (even espresso). He must not be in a hurry. Coffee time is a daily luxurious relaxing activity. You may see drivers have a strange accessory in their car, where almost nowhere else can be seen. It is a “base for a glass” and almost everybody when he starts for work in the morning, places a cup of coffee in this base. You see, in the morning when we are in a hurry to go at work, we cannot enjoy our coffee at home. So we take advantage of the time we need to reach work! :)

Hmmm, another mystery you may notice, is in toilets.
In some toilets, there are signs saying 'Do not throw papers in the toilet'.
Because in some places the pipe net is old and narrow, people have placed in toilets, special bins for used toilet papers, to avoid a 'bottleneck' of papers in the pipe system!!! :)

    Tavli
    by marka13
In many cafes, you will find the accessories, to play what is most known to western world as backgammon. It’s an ancient game and it is very popular among eastern Mediterranean countries.
Greeks call it Tavli and spend much of their free time, playing this game in cafes. They play three different games and they love this “sport” as it gives them the opportunity to develop strategy and perhaps turn to advantage their bad luck in dice. But what makes it so popular among greeks, is the standard practice of teasing each other when they play, aiming to make their opponent to lose temper and play worse than usual!!! :) If you ever watch a tavli game between “loud” greeks, it is sure that you will recognize this practice and its effects, even if you do not know the rules of the game or the language they use! :)

    evil eye protector
    by marka13
The evil eye is a kind of curse put on a child, livestock, crops, etc., by someone who has the "evil eye." The superstitious belief in the evil eye is ancient and widespread, though certainly not universal. It is thought to have originated in Sumeria. The belief is especially prevalent today in the Mediterranean and Aegean, where apotropaic amulets and talismans are commonly sold as protection against the evil eye
Greeks are very superstitious and usually blame the evil eye for everything… :). They wear “blue eye” beads to be protected and you can find them everywhere to be sold.
They say “magic words” to free somebody from the evil eye and generally it is a deep and general belief especially among the elder.
Tip: If you have headache and you feel weak and need to sleep or you have difficulty in breathing, or generally something goes wrong with your health, tell it to a middle aged woman… and you will almost certainly take the same answer! The evil eye hit you!
Perhaps some of them are eager to free you from the curse of evil eye… (no money needed for it). They just say some words and they free you!!!!
But I can’t reveal all the secrets of the evil eye here! Come to discover them yourself asking people around for the “kako mati” = bad eye!
