frappe coffee by marka13 The most popular type of coffee among Greeks is the cold instant coffee they invented, and call it frappe. It is ideal for the hot summer months and very easy to be prepared. Instructions: You put 1-2 little spoons of nes café in a shaker and as much sugar you like (usually 2-3 spoons is ok). Then you add a very small amount of water (just to cover coffee and sugar) and you start shaking all these for 1 minute. You serve it in a water glass with a straw and you add 3-4 ice cubes and water. You can also add milk if you want. Tip: if you like the foam of frappe and you want more of it, you have to add a bit more water –(let’s say double) when you covered the ingredients (coffee and sugar). Leave a Comment

Illustration to users' instruction by SzaraManisha This is amazing how much in common the greeks especially from the northern greece have in common with turks (im sorry if i offended anybody). This is also the custom to sit in the afternoon in one of the tavli bars or just in a bar and start a tavli game. The game may be also recognized as backgammon. Make sure you learn it before going to greece: it is fun to play it on the real board not on the computer one. For those who wish to buy a board, the best quality are those qooden ones. Important is the sound made with the dye on the board. And this is possible only on the wooden board. Price of the most simple wooden boards aboud 13-15 euro Leave a Comment

coffee time in Santorini by marka13 Turks call it turkish, , Egyptians call it Arabic, we call it greek and perhaps it comes from Byzantine years… J It is the other most popular type of coffee in Greece. It is traditional and preferable from the elder greeks. It is hot, it has a very nice smell and it is served in a small cup. You drink the coffee until you see the coffee sediment at the bottom. Its preparation needs knowledge and time… Hurry is unacceptable for this type of coffee, so prefer to taste it in a quiet not touristic café, where they will prepare it traditionally. Slowly boiled in low temperature. Ask for a “gliko helleniko cafe” that means sweet greek coffee. Ask for a “metrio helleniko” if you want medium sweet coffee. Ask for a “sketo helleniko” if you don’t like sugar at all. Leave a Comment

Dont be surprised if going to a taverna with a group of people you will not get your own dish. Usually it is better to go there with more people, then you have more possibilities to take more dishes. Then you simply get a small plate, the food is put in the middle and everybody takes from it. Its great opportunity to try the greek specialities, which are indeed perfect from the culinar point of view Leave a Comment

Greeks love coffee. Although it is not in custom to drink coffee after 19.00 o'clock. Usually about 15-17 all the cafeterias in the cities are filled with habitants drinking coffee and talking. There are two types of typically greek coffee: frappe - a greek invention, cold coffee with ice - gliko me gala - sweet and with milk, this is my most favourite one greek coffee - as well could be called turkish coffee as the way to prepare it and the taste are the same. Coffee boiled in special pan, not too strong. Just dont try to drink the black remains from the coffee, they are not to drink! Leave a Comment

Greek Virgin Mary by Irine_29 For Greeks, there is God and there is Her. When in happines but mostly when in difficulties, Greeks instinctively call her name. Here, she is in an a setting I like: Old, faded icon surrounded by blue. Beauty in humble simplicity. The icon is set in an old chapel somewhere in the Athenian mountains. Leave a Comment

Every home should have one by iandsmith Now, I can't speak for other countries but, in Australia, from time to time, some people put garden gnomes in their lawn. It is fair to suggest, I think, that the Greek Islands have not caught on to this fad as yet. However, in Oia, on Santorini, I was taken by this possibly more ancient or possibly more modern fad. The only drawbacks I could see were that boats cost a lot more and take up a lot more room. Other than that, I thought it had a lot to offer in lieu of a gnome! Leave a Comment

by LysDor * Shops and supermarkets in areas frequented by tourists are usually open all day long, from 9 am to 10 pm. A periptero is a sort of kiosk that sells all kinds of things, ranging from chocolate and chips, to batteries and magazines. These kiosks are very useful, they can be found easily and many are open 24 hours / day. * Water in all areas where tourists are likely to find themselves is chlorinated and perfectly safe to drink. Yet bottled water, you will find, is very popular, primarily for conveni ence reasons, and is widely available. * The sun in Greece is very bright and strong, and a sunscreen should always be applied when sunbathing. Useful tip: Most TV channels interrupt their regular summer program several times per day to broadcast Sunbathing Report. This report will tell you how long it is advized that you stay in the sun according to the time of day and your geographic location all around Greece. * Credit cards are honored at practically all hotels, restaurants and shops. * The drinking age in Greece is 16. * Taxi drivers in Greece, just like in all popular tourist resorts, might try to take advantage of your infamiliarity with the place you are visiting and overcharge you. In airports and popular tourist reso rts, you will often find a police officer standing by the taxi station, who is there to prevent such conduct. Thank you for dropping by...hope you enjoied KOS & PATMOS ! RODOS is in my Travelogue Leave a Comment

by MrGQ Most resturants have a 15% service fee. Yet many waiters expect to be tipped! But you don't have to tip them another 15%. One more thing, on the Islands, people there are a bit more conservative. And I have seen some ''bad'' tourists try to ''aggressivly'' persue the local women, and all I can say that is a very very bad idea! Greek men are very protective of thier women! You have been warned :) Leave a Comment
