If you are bored of the beach of Matala, you can change and go to Kommos beach that is at 10 minutes by car. the beach is made by little grey pebbles and coarse sand and it's veeeeeery long with nice emerald green seawater and a high cliff on the left side.
Another feature is that on this beach the last remaining turtles lay their eggs.
There are volunteers on the beach that help the little turtles to find the right way to the sea as when they born, they are confused by the light of the town behind the beach and tend to go toward the road instead of the sea and they often die. Infact, once born, they have few time to reach the sea before they get dehydrated.
If you want you can leave some money for the safeguard of the turtles, the volunteers have some stands in the parking area of the beach.
The best thing of this beach it's that also during high season you can find you own piece of beach, without that it becomes too crowded.

In the night, when you go out for a walk after a good dinner, don't miss to have a look on the caves of Matala. In the night they are lightened by artificial lights and the effect is impressive!
Very romantic!!

I really felt freedom while having my holiday in Matala...I guess the "flower-power" spirit is still there. People were so friendly and hospitable, food is absolutely great, the sea is splendid and the atmosphere is special.
Don't miss Marinero Bar which is "the hottest place in town" during night:)

These rocks are the main must see in Matala. There are holes that were the homes of people from the neolithic period where they hide when some enemy wanted to kill them :) and finally Matala became popular thanks the Hippie movement. Why? Hippies fond out that there is great accomodation so they lived in these holes, well people here call it caves. But it is not allowed these days because some of the caves are pretty dangerous the stability is not guaranteed. So u should wake up with stone on your stomach one day.
Matala thanks its position used to be seaport of legendary minoic Phaistos what should be proved also by archeological site right there if u walk a bit towards rocks behind the village.

If you like swimming in the morning sea with sunrise in front of u then this is the best place for you. :) I did it more times and it is excellent. You can schnorchel or just diving without any problem and to watch a bit of private life of fish :), let's say u can be an observer of their breakfast hehe :))) Anyway, the whole beach is totally empty and that's the best shower in the morning :)

Yeah, when I arrived to the Matala before sunrise there was a big noise and we didn't know why :) then I realized there is a big tree (ficus benjamina) where sparrows have a senate :) and they thank to the Sun for a nice day twice. When there is a sunrise and also the sunset. You must experience that :) it is really amazing
