Matala Things to Do

  • Kommos beach, close to Matala

If you are bored of the beach of Matala, you can change and go to Kommos beach that is at 10 minutes by car. the beach is made by little grey pebbles and coarse sand and it's veeeeeery long with nice emerald green seawater and a high cliff on the left side.Another feature is that on this beach the last remaining turtles lay their eggs. There are...

  • The caves of Matala in the night

In the night, when you go out for a walk after a good dinner, don't miss to have a look on the caves of Matala. In the night they are lightened by artificial lights and the effect is impressive!Very romantic!!

  • living la vida loca in Matala

I really felt freedom while having my holiday in Matala...I guess the "flower-power" spirit is still there. People were so friendly and hospitable, food is absolutely great, the sea is splendid and the atmosphere is special.Don't miss Marinero Bar which is "the hottest place in town" during night:)

  • The rocks and the little bay

These rocks are the main must see in Matala. There are holes that were the homes of people from the neolithic period where they hide when some enemy wanted to kill them :) and finally Matala became popular thanks the Hippie movement. Why? Hippies fond out that there is great accomodation so they lived in these holes, well people here call it caves....

  • Romantic Souls Attention :)

If you like swimming in the morning sea with sunrise in front of u then this is the best place for you. :) I did it more times and it is excellent. You can schnorchel or just diving without any problem and to watch a bit of private life of fish :), let's say u can be an observer of their breakfast hehe :))) Anyway, the whole beach is totally empty...

  • Sparrow Parliament

Yeah, when I arrived to the Matala before sunrise there was a big noise and we didn't know why :) then I realized there is a big tree (ficus benjamina) where sparrows have a senate :) and they thank to the Sun for a nice day twice. When there is a sunrise and also the sunset. You must experience that :) it is really amazing

Fresh seafood right by the sea... This place is warm and welcoming, you hear the waves crashing and rolling, accompanied by a mellow reggae sound (mainly Marley & family), while waiter Kostas usually sings along, smiling and running around, bringing a positive vibe to the place. The fish of the day are displayed, and Kostas will stand along and...

This is the typical taverna with a great view on the Matala beach with its special atmosphere. It partly remains u something from the Greek Zorba or so... menu is written in more languages including Russian (what isn't that typical thought). Rock bar: The simple night life of Matala

    by kia81 Written Mar 4, 2008

    2 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

In Matala night life is very simple, but lively! there few bars/pubs and 1 sort of disco and they are all concentrated on the left part of the beach, on the rocks on the opposite side of the caves.
These pubs are small, colourfull, with all types of music (from raggae to disco, passing trough rock, punk etc...) and sometimes there is live music.

My favourite place was Rock Bar where they plays also Ramones, Iggy Pop, the Clash and the Police, some of my favourite groups.

There, me and my friends, spent one of the best night in Crete, we knew some locals (Dimitri and friends) and we had a lot of fun (and we got drunk together, I admit it...)

This is a picture of that night!

Dress Code: As you want...however not too smart!

All together at the Rock Bar

    KTEL Buses

by Skipka Updated Oct 3, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

KTEL Buses are airconditioned standard buses going from Heraklion to Matala directly, but there can occur that the driver will scream "Change buses" and then u will wait for a while for another bus going directly to Matala. But it is fun..believe me ...

Ticket from Heraklion to Matala costs around 6 Euro, Matala -Phaistos (Festos) just 1,50 Euro.

  • Sheep grazing

To meet sheep isn't that hard in Matala even if the place itself looks like touristic centre already.

  • Be careful :)

This is the Matala Beach Dog who lives here. He is so cute and always wants to play but be careful when playing :) when I was walking he tried to bite my feet :) so u can imagine how fast my walking was :)

  • Parking and grazing :)

Hehe this was the cutest photo I did ...thought. The herd of sheep is marching from the rocks to the surrounding of "Hotel Street" (as we named it) and sheep don't mind there is a parking place if there is a grass. U know food is food ...

Matala Tourist Traps

The size of the beach >:)

by Skipka Updated Sep 30, 2003

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

People if u think that Matala Beach is such a large piece of beach, forget it. It just seems like that on pictures. When I first saw the beach I thought I am in Liliput's land :) But even if it isn't that big, it is wonderful!

  • The caves in the Matala rocks

As the rock itself is very easy to curve in, it was the best choice for people in the past to settle there. On the other side they used this holes in the rock as a buried place. Matala itself is full of such caves and they are in perfect condition, just time to time t here is some damaged. For those who like to explore such places they are empty :)...
