  • Kommos beach, close to Matala

If you are bored of the beach of Matala, you can change and go to Kommos beach that is at 10 minutes by car. the beach is made by little grey pebbles and coarse sand and it's veeeeeery long with nice emerald green seawater and a high cliff on the left side.Another feature is that on this beach the last remaining turtles lay their eggs. There are...

I really felt freedom while having my holiday in Matala...I guess the "flower-power" spirit is still there. People were so friendly and hospitable, food is absolutely great, the sea is splendid and the atmosphere is special.Don't miss Marinero Bar which is "the hottest place in town" during night:)

  • The rocks and the little bay

These rocks are the main must see in Matala. There are holes that were the homes of people from the neolithic period where they hide when some enemy wanted to kill them :) and finally Matala became popular thanks the Hippie movement. Why? Hippies fond out that there is great accomodation so they lived in these holes, well people here call it caves....

  • Fresh seafood on the grill

Fresh seafood right by the sea... This place is warm and welcoming, you hear the waves crashing and rolling, accompanied by a mellow reggae sound (mainly Marley & family), while waiter Kostas usually sings along, smiling and running around, bringing a positive vibe to the place. The fish of the day are displayed, and Kostas will stand along and...

This is the typical taverna with a great view on the Matala beach with its special atmosphere. It partly remains u something from the Greek Zorba or so... menu is written in more languages including Russian (what isn't that typical thought). There is a good homemade wine, delicious dishes and cats begging for some piece of meat :) There is a...

All together at the Rock Bar

In Matala night life is very simple, but lively! there few bars/pubs and 1 sort of disco and they are all concentrated on the left part of the beach, on the rocks on the opposite side of the caves.
These pubs are small, colourfull, with all types of music (from raggae to disco, passing trough rock, punk etc...) and sometimes there is live music.

My favourite place was Rock Bar where they plays also Ramones, Iggy Pop, the Clash and the Police, some of my favourite groups.

There, me and my friends, spent one of the best night in Crete, we knew some locals (Dimitri and friends) and we had a lot of fun (and we got drunk together, I admit it...)

This is a picture of that night!

Dress Code: As you want...however not too smart!

KTEL Buses are airconditioned standard buses going from Heraklion to Matala directly, but there can occur that the driver will scream "Change buses" and then u will wait for a while for another bus going directly to Matala. But it is fun..believe me ...

Ticket from Heraklion to Matala costs around 6 Euro, Matala -Phaistos (Festos) just 1,50 Euro.

People if u think that Matala Beach is such a large piece of beach, forget it. It just seems like that on pictures. When I first saw the beach I thought I am in Liliput's land :) But even if it isn't that big, it is wonderful!
