Messolonghi (or Messolongi or Missolonghi) is famous for being the place of one of the most famous sieges in the Greece Independent War against Otoman Empire (1826).
For most foreigners, Messolonghi is the place where Lord Byron died, in 1824, of a fever that was probably a relapse of the malaria that he had contracted in 1811.

Not far from Parikia (Paros) there is a valley called Petaloudes where, in July & august, thousands of butterflies gather and cover all.
You can take a bus there. At the bus stop there is normally a local peasant waiting for tourists. He takes you up the valley in his pick up for 1 euro. Walking is about 20 minutes...

Patmos is a rather strange island. Located in the far east of the Aegean, it's got a special mystic atmosphere.
Here is where St.John wrote its Apocalypse books of the Bible. There is still a monastery built around the cave where he had the Revelations.
In the main village, Hora, there is an amazing medieval castle and a byzantine cobbled road around.

Besides, it is not a very crowded island and, though being rocky and not very green, it's got a few good beaches too...

This little (tiny) byzantine village in the southeast of the Peloponessos is really a hidden treasury in Greece. Not far from Athens (5 hours) is not often included in tourists packs, so is not as crowded as most of the tourist places of Peloponessos.

Surrounded by a medieval wall, the town has been admirably well preserved and a walk by its pedestrian cobbled alleys takes you directly to byzantine and medieval times...

The Argo Saronic Gulf which is the stretch of sea linking the shores of Attica to those of the Peloponnese, contains a further group of small islands:

Salamis, Aegina, Poros, Hydra and Spetses

These islands are beautiful and are ideal for a one day get away, or for a few weeks. The islands are very green and you can find secluded bays to enjoy the crystal clear waters.

The Ancient Greeks were great lovers of music and drama..Me too!

A Greek odeion was a theatre built for musical performances.

This Roman architecture “Odeum” -with its façade, arched doorways and windows- was erected by Herodes Atticus in memory of his wife in 161 A.D. It was divided into 3 parts: the Stage, the Orchestra and the auditorium. In this Odeion/ Odeum performances took place on the Stage; whereas in Greek theatres the actors played on the Orchestra.

When in Greece in Summer never miss the open air performances of the Classical Greek heritage of Drama (comedy & tragedy) presented in Modern Greek, at this one or the larger theatre of Epidauros If you do not understand Greek, I advise you to read a proper translation in advance, that will give you a full pleasure of the play. For your guidance, normally on stage they still stick to the classical scenarios in a modern tongue.

I like the “Ecclesiazusae = Women at the Assembly’ a comedy written by Aristophanes in the 4th century B.C. suggesting that the author was aware of the views on communism and women’s rights... As the result of conspiracy of women led by Praxagora, she and her fellow conspirators, disguised as men, went so early in the morning to have the priority of taking their places at the Assembly, and carry by a large majority a motion by which the affairs of the State are to be entrusted to the women. Praxagora, having been appointed head of the new government returns to her husband and explains the new social system that is to be introduced, community of property, community of women and children. The women preserve new sexual privileges… HOW?..A young man arrives to find his sweetheart, but three old hags assert their prior rights to him ..the more ugly, the more righteous to start love with the smart boy… and the farce goes on..!!?? Under such circumatances beauty will never be an advantage!
