Dodecanese islands

by volopolo

The Dodecanese group consists of twelve major islands:Astipalea, Kalymnos, Karpathos, Kassos, Kastelorizo, Kos, Lipsos, Leros, Nissiros, Patmos, Rhodos, Symi and a number of smaller islands, each with its distinctive features and peculiarities. The Dodecanese lie to the east of the Cyclades, near the coast of Turkey. The islands of the Dodecanese are the actual mountain tops of land that once connected Greece with Asia Minor. Cyclades islands

by volopolo

The Cyclades consist of 39 islands of which 24 are inhabited, the more important ones being Amorgos, Anafi, Andros, Antiparos, Delos, Ios, Kea, Kimolos, Folegandros, Milos, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Santorini, Serifos, Sikinos, Sifnos, Syros, Tinos. The Cyclades are the most popular of Greek islands and some say the most picturesque. This is where you will see the archetypal dazzling white sugar cube buildings ( Cyclade architecture) and blue domed churches set against typically rugged landscape. They are regularly serviced by ferries and flights and are easy to get to and around.

Excellent Picnic Spots

by nickandchris

Greece is famous for it's magnificent views and often they build what we call "gazebos" looking over the views, with room to park. They make excellent picnic spots, out of the sun, with seating laid on. We have had many a fine feast in them.Throughout Greece, you will also notice spring water taps where you can park and sit in the shade and either fill your water bottles or enjoy a cool drink. Many of these are beautifully maintained with elaborate stonework and seating.Make sure you take your rubbish away with you. As so often is the case with beauty spots in Greece, they can be strewn with rubbish. It's so simple to leave nothing but footprints....

Battle of Thermopylae

by JREllison

Battle of Thermopylae isn't really off the beaten path, there is a major high way passing right by the site. The monument to the 300 Spartans is on one side of the highway and the battle sight on the other side. The object of the battle was to keep the Persians under Xerxes isolate to the costal plain. y In Leonidas time the pass was a narrow track less than 100 feet wide under the cliff. Today errosion by the Spercheios River have widened it to a breadth of over a mile.To get there take the E-75 North out of Athens, Thermopylea is about 85 miles at the head of the Gulf of Mallakos.

Mountain Roads and Mountain Villages

by deecat

Photographs:1. Road in mountains from Delphi to Kalambaka.2. Countryside between Thebes and Delphi.3. Arachova, a picturesque mountain village.4. Rug purchased in Arachova.I was certainly glad that I was not the one driving! The bus driver was quite capable, and my admiration for him rose a great deal when he maneuvered these roads with ease. One of the picturesque mountain villages was Arachova where we stopped at a roadside shop. Jayne and I purchased cotton homemade rugs with the image of Athena, Goddess of crafts, wisdom, and founder of Athens. On the rug, she has the Aegis (the breastplate with Medusa's head emblazoned on it that was given to her by her father, Zeus.) The rug can be used on both sides. For instance, mine is dark blue and white with a white image of Athena on one side and just the reverse on the other. The terrain in these areas was quite rugged and filled with...
