Odieon of Herodes Atticus

by sayedaburas

The Ancient Greeks were great lovers of music and drama..Me too!A Greek odeion was a theatre built for musical performances. This Roman architecture “Odeum” -with its façade, arched doorways and windows- was erected by Herodes Atticus in memory of his wife in 161 A.D. It was divided into 3 parts: the Stage, the Orchestra and the auditorium. In this Odeion/ Odeum performances took place on the Stage; whereas in Greek theatres the actors played on the Orchestra. When in Greece in Summer never miss the open air performances of the Classical Greek heritage of Drama (comedy & tragedy) presented in Modern Greek, at this one or the larger theatre of Epidauros If you do not understand Greek, I advise you to read a proper translation in advance, that will give you a full pleasure of the play. For your guidance, normally on stage they still stick to the classical scenarios in a modern tongue.I like...

Vikos Gorge.

by Maurizioago

The Vikos Gorge is situated inside the Vikos Aaos National Park; in northeastern Epirus. This park is located some km. north of Ioannina. This gorge has a lenght of about 20 km. It is crossed by the river Vikos. As you will see in the travelogue, a small monastery overlooks the gorge. The nearest village to this place is Monodendri; a nice village with houses made of stone.

Acheloos river is in central greece in Evrytania area. There are many companies for outdoor activities which can arrange for you an expedition. For us it was a 3-day river cross with canoes. Canoeing is really tough thing. Our arms were burning... But afterall we enjoyed it so much.... We had over night on the river banks.... Beautiful!

The Greek Islands Aboard a Tall Ship

by ShipCritic

While I've visited the Greek Islands aboard many cruise ships, my favorite voyage was aboard Star Flyer, owned by Star Clippers. These are authentic clipper ships built in the early 1990's (Star Flyer, Star Clipper) and 2001. The 150-passenger ship is small enough to visit islands the large cruise ships can't visit. Very affordable, comfortable cabins and fairly good food. The best part is the camraderie that develops between passengers (roughly half American, half European) and the thrill of being under sail.

Traditional Greek Island

by dstevenson

Makis Tsoukalas, the General Manager of Passepartout in Athens, Greece in Syntagma Square arranged a 3 day visit for us to Parikia, the capital town and port of Paros Island. He arranged fast ferry tickets from Piraeus to Paros. We had pick up from ferry to Pelagos Studios where we were treated superbly. Bill Pasalis runs the place and his friend Frank took us to rent a moped for around $10 USD per day. They fed us coffee and bread with butter and jelly every morning. They both lived many years in US so were fluent in English. Our visit to Paros and to Pelagos Studio was the highlight of our trip.

The Bourtzi in Nafplio's Harbour

by Paul2001

The Bourtzi is a small fortress sitting on a rock in the harbour of Napflio. It sits on a small island which is more like a rock than anything. The fortress was built by the Venetians in 1473. At one time it was a small hotel however today it does not seem to be used for much at all. You cannot even visit the interior of the fort. Several small launches ply there way back and forth to the Bourtzi throughout the day. I would consider the trip only mildly diverting and not a must-see.

The not so popular island of Kythera

by mexicruiser

Kythera is a wonderful, quiet island off the southeast coast of the Pelopennese - at least it was quiet when we visited there back in '94, but of course things have changed with the increase in tourism, and the advent of the internet where one can now find information on previously unheard of places...sometimes this is good, sometimes not so good!!We rented a moped in the town of Kythera where the ferry from Gythion had deposited us, and drove to the northern village of Agia Pelagia to check it out and do some sightseeing along the way. It's a very picturesque village and we were a little disappointed that we had already rented a room back in Kythera - this would definitely have been a more fun and lively village to spend some time in! Be prepared to stop and take a few breaks so that you can stretch your legs - they get mighty cramped and stiff, especially as a passenger on the back of...

Some sights are just crazy

by Whitevanman

While travelling in the Southern Peloponnisos between Skala and Gytheio we turned the corner and saw these bathers sharing the beach with this huge rusting hulk. The road onwards to Kalamata although very scenic was very narrow and winding making for an extremely long and frustrating day in the saddle.
