Amazing what you can just stumble across

by Whitevanman

We hate motorway, autoroute, autobahn, autopista, freeway doesn't matter what you call it we hate it and always prefer to use A roads. It might take a bit longer and burn more fuel but at least you get to see the places you are travelling through. You never see anything from the autoroute! The huge 6m high lion stands proud at the roadside just outside Chaironeia and marks a battle in 338BC where Greece was defeated by Phillip II of Macedon and his son Alexander. I first saw this lion illumnated very late one night while lost. It totally blew me away and gave me a moment I'll never forget and it more than made up for travelling an hour in the wrong direction.

More Choice

Another option is to contact EOS or else the Hellenic Climbing Association. They also organise expeditions that you could participate last minute. The telephones below are the Athens offices but I know that they have branches all over Greece so you could contact the people of other areas to find out what they are up to. Unfortunately, I could not find a website for EOS. I am sure they have one somewhere, they are the oldest climbing association in Greece, but where?

The Archeological Museum in Nafplio

by Paul2001

On of the more pleasants surprises I had while touring Greece was my visit to the Archeological Museum in Nafplio. The museum is located in a very fine Venetian mansion located on the end of lovely town square. The museums collection is not that large but it is strong just the same. This is because it is loaded with artifacts collected from the many sites that surround Nafplio. This includes a superb 14th century B.C. bronze armour from Dendra. This is what the soldiers during the time of Siege of Troy would have worn so I found it quite interesting. There is also a good bronze armour from Tiryns. There are many ceramic pieces from the nearby sites of Mycenaen culture including a great figurine. Finally there are also may terracotta masks and figurines to gaze upon during your visit. As the museum is not that large you will not find that the collection's artifacts all seem to "run...

Thermopylae

by viddra

Thermopylae is a very famous place in central Greece, where a historic battle between the Spartans, led by Leonidas I, and Xerxes's 30,000 Persians took place in 480 BC. Leonidas I and his soldiers fought bravely but died during their attempt to stop an invading Persian army. The great monument in Leonidas I's honour and 300 cypresses surrounding it reminds people of their heroic death.Thermopylae, meaning 'hot gates', got its name from the hot sulfur springs nearby. And it sure is hot there, as if the ground itself burns under your feet.

Tiryns (Tírynthos) - Hercules' Hometown!

by Paul2001

This small but relatively important ancient ruin does not receive many visitors, especially when compared to nearby Mycenae. The ruins are about 3,000 years old and consists of massive 7m thick walls that stretch 750m over a cigar shaped space. Inside this huge stoned barrier were several majestic buildings of which only the foundations remain. However because the site is fairly flat you make out what were a palace, colonnaded court, royal apartments and a great hall called a megaron. It is according to legend the birthplace of the famed hero, Hercules. The site is open daily from 8am to 8pm on a daily basis but closes at 2pm during the off season. It costs 1.50 Euros to visit

The Agia Sofia Church in the Kastos in Pilos

by Paul2001

Located in the middle of the great castle at Pilos is the very fine Agia Sofia Church. The church is a superb example of the 12th century Byzantine style. It was at onetime a mosque under Turkish rule but converted back to a church upon the expulsion of the Turks from Greece.
