The Acropolis at Rhodes

by iandsmith

The ancient Greek games arena that used to seat 28,000 on the hill at the back of Rhodes is worth a look. The hill is named Monte Smith (obviously they heard I was coming!) it also has a bit of an old temple and a small Greek theatre (odeon) plus some, as yet buried, ruins. The excavations, done by the Italians between great wars, have unearthed some interesting stuff but, the highlight for me was the small museum on site. Some of the stories and facts were amazing.Like the long jumpers used weights in their hands to assist them at take off, there were mechanical starting gates for the runners and all athletes competed nude because a women faked her sex once and they weren't going to get caught again! There's also the wonderful legend of the father whose sons had won medals and they came to celebrate with him and do a victory lap but, sadly, he had a heart attack and died.I also have to...

Peace in the islands

by shoestring

If you are looking for a quiet peaceful break, choose an island that doesn't have it's own airport. Greek ferries are reliable and safe, and the sea journey is part of your holiday. If you are very lucky, you'll be accompanied by dolphins! Alternatively, get a cheap flight to Athens, metro to Pireaus (cheap and quick), then the world's (or at least Greece) is your lobster!

Pelion

by tini58de

Pelion is the area around Volos. It is referred to as the fruit garden of Greece, since you can find many apple trees in that area. We spent a few days at Horefto (55 km from Volos), the port of Zagora, an irresistible spot with shining sea and a lovely beach. It is totally different from other parts of Greece that I have experienced so far: so green, a little wild, a little different architecture - and the best Zaganaki (grilled cheese) I have ever had!!!

Tyrins

by tini58de

Tyrins is different! If you look for colums and temples, you are absolutely wrong! Here you can find a Mycenean acropolis with a complicated system of stone gates, ramparts and defensive structures. It was the Germany archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann, who started to understand the importance of the place, and excavations begun in 1884. Tyrins lies 4 km from Nafplion/Peleponnese

Argos

by tini58de

On my first trip to Greece we spend two days in Argos/Peleponnese. I don't know, why, but I really loved that place! The city of Argos is the oldest continuously inhabited city in Greece!!! Argos is the agricultural and commercial center of the area and is well known for its citrus orchards. The ancient theater is the most popular tourist attraction in the city and is bigger than the theater at Epidauros. Other than that they have an archaeological musem, which is/was worth stopping for.

Go to Kastri and Astros!

by cherrybubble

Please..when you are traveling to Greece..DO NOT just go to Athens!Sure I can understand that everyone wants to see the Parthenon and such, but Athens is such a small part of Greece! and me being Greek I can say that Athens isn't that great! It is too hot (even at night..uhh it is the worst at night!) and polluted. I've heard that the night life is amazing but you can do those things in other areas, where you can actually breath the air.I just remember all the years I went to Greece and spent a few days at my aunt & uncles house. they have a beautiful white, 3 story house with marble floors & countertops & many pretty statues inside. I love there house alot but I remember having to sleep outside, in the hammock because it was just SO hot inside. You could hear cars drive by every second and dogs howling all night long so outside wasn't much better. I'm done with Athens!I must explain to...

Best aqua coloured bay

by tuktuker

If you can get to Antipaxos it is definitely worth the trip. I believe there is a ferry that leaves from Paxos if you are not travelling by boat. The view from the restaurant is spectacular and the food is great. Have some of the local wine too, it has bang for your buck !! But the best part of this little hideaway is definitely the aqua coloured water. It is picture postcard material and if you can stay after the ferry leaves, a midnight swim is the thing to do.

Athens Cathedral

by freya_heaven

It would be easy to walk past Athens Cathedral on Mitropoleos Street & not realise it is actually Athens Cathedral.Built between 1839 and 1863, the cathedral is a relatively new structure in ancient Athens! In 1843, 72 damaged churches were demolished from the Psirri area & parts of each were used to build Athens Cathedral. There is a pleasant square in the front, great for people watching

Bourtzi by the Venetians in 1473 who held it until 1540, the fortress has had quite a varied history. The Bourtzi castle was recapured from the Turks in 1822, It then became home to hangmen who executed prisoners of the Palamidi Fort in Nafplio. For 40 years from 1930 the Island became a hotel. There is a music festival held here in JuneBoats offer trips to Bourtzi departing from the Akti Miaouli

Zappeion Hall

by freya_heaven

The Zappeion Hall was originally constructed to hold the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. This was also the first Olympic village. The complex is now it's an exhibition hall & hosts many events, galleries & exhibitions. This is also the place where Greece signed her entrance to the European Economic Community , on 29th May 1979. They were filming a production the front of the building, when we were visiting!
