Light cool clothing. Comfortable shoes. Bottle of water.
Sunblock.
Just take your bikini bottoms girls. Don't worry you will look OK topless when you see the rest of 'em. Leave a Comment

Pack as little as possible. It makes it easier for travel.
Take plenty of warm clothes. It was pretty cold when we were there and I wasn't expecting that. Also, take good walking shoes. I was dumb and pretty much had sandles and uncomfortable shoes. Be prepared!
Take plenty of film and batteries.
Traveler's checks are always a bonus. They can come in handy in an emergency. Leave a Comment

by PieterB In your own country, by sandals that are water resistant and that don't slip of. You'll need them if you want to see the nice snorkling places Crete has! There are not many beaches and they are mostly small so those beaches are full of tourists. There other rocky places that let you reach the sea, where the water is clean, so clean you can see 6 to 10 meters deep. You'll need the sandels to get in and out of the water and even to swim with.
Have some moskito repelant. They haven't invented moskito nets yet. Leave a Comment

by tarim Best: A very, very light tramper bag or backbag.
In July, August you don't need shoes here because of the weather but at any time because of the bad roads and the litter (glass, metal, oil) on it. If it does rain, you still may buy some clothes... it's not that expensive.
1. Don't drive scooters. 2. If you do, don't get hurt. 3. If you do, pray; there are few hospitals and very little people speaking English to carry you to one (and if it's a nice litte island at the end of the world it might well be the end of _your_ world).
Bring films. You can buy them eventually but the are expensive.
You may carry a tent with you, but if you don't mind there are always tents to rent (or even pavillions) - brave people try the beach (but it's windy, sandy, sticky and often littered).
Bring HAIR CONDITIONER!!! .. or your hair will look like straw after one week. Bring after sun balm for softer skin. These items you may get at a camping site or tourist center but not always while hiking across an island or camping in the wilderness ;) Leave a Comment

Wear loose trousers and long sleeved shirts in the evening, keeps you nice and cool and bite free.
Mossy net, sprays and cream, lotions and potions vital to keep the buggers away from you in the evening. You can also buy antihistamines (Zirtek, Clarytin) at the local pharmacy at the fraction of UK prices. Great for hypochondriacs like yours sincerely. Leave a Comment

Get a phrase book. Lonely planet has one that is small and compact. The people I met were always patient and polite, but I made an effort to communicate in Greek first. My Greek was awful but I think it helped a bit. Locals were more willing to help me out. One thought, if you know that you are traveling soon. Go to www.meetup.com It is a website that can connect you to others if you would like to learn the language, {or enough of the language to function on a rudimentary level.} Type in the word Greek or Hellas. Many people are multi lingual; however, it might not be one of your languages. Have fun and enjoy! Leave a Comment

Louis de Bernieres - Captain Corelli's Mandolin: This book is situated on a Greek island. It's a beautiful book about a romance in the war and especially about the life on a Greek island in the forties. I don't like common lovestories, but this is really a beautiful book. I can recommend it to everyone. Futhermore I can recommend all the books written in the ancient Greece. Read a book with the collected mythology. Or read one of the tragedies of Aeschylos, Sophocles or Euripides (I recommend Antigone of Sophocles, or Oedipous Rex). You could also try Plato or Aristotle, though it may be 'hard work'. I read the Replubic and it's really illuminating. And of course you could read Homer. Iliad and the Odyssee will never loose their attraction. Leave a Comment

Bring sun screen,lots of it

Buy mossie cream and sun cream in Greece if pos - seems to be cheaper for the latter and better for the former. You really need the mossie cream and those plug in things if staying anywhere near water in spring/summer, and be aware that they will have your exposed flesh when you are sitting in your taverna in the evening, oh yes.
We only saw one camping shop outside of Athens in the Peloponnese - bizarrely selling Welsh Gelert equipment - in Argos, Argolid, but think may have gone when we returned there in 2006? However, gas available everywhere.
Always take a universal travel plug esp. if staying outside resort hotels (never stayed in one so don't know if this applies) as there are often no plugs, and if there are, they don't fit. Not that travel plugs do - but its a start.
