Use a Phrase Book

by Karen10019

Get a phrase book. Lonely planet has one that is small and compact. The people I met were always patient and polite, but I made an effort to communicate in Greek first. My Greek was awful but I think it helped a bit. Locals were more willing to help me out.One thought, if you know that you are traveling soon. Go to www.meetup.com It is a website that can connect you to others if you would like to learn the language, {or enough of the language to function on a rudimentary level.} Type in the word Greek or Hellas. Many people are multi lingual; however, it might not be one of your languages.Have fun and enjoy!

Pack a sweater

by jennijeans

Bring a sweater. Being a north american and I hear the words medaterrain and you think exotic hot weather. I was there in April and I froze!!!! After May it is very hot. Toiletries tend to be very expensive so prepare in advance. I couldn't believe the price of detergent to wash clothes!

Packing List

by sjvessey

Your suitcases plus a backpack for when you're out and about. Beach shoes, shorts, swimming gear, t-shirts, that kind of thing. If you go in the summer it's 40 C in the daytime, and still pretty warm even at midnight. No warm clothes required whatsoever. Mosquito repellent essential. I would strongly advise you also take diahorrea tablets because the plumbing is too narrow to take any kind of paper - it all has to go into a little bin by the side of the toilet which gets emptied every day (if you're lucky). You do NOT want to get the runs in this place! Buy your film before you arrive and you'll save yourself a load of cash. Lots and lots of sunblock. This is the sun from hell. Take aftersun too - you will probably need it.

Packing List for Greece during Winter.

by evancheong

Suitcase is fine but not those big mega ones. If you have the intention of island hopping, try and bring backpacks instead. Easier to hop onto the ferry and walk around to locate your accomodation. 1. Slippers This is important to me because some of these hotels have dirty floors and its more convenient to walk around if I have my slippers on rather than the shoes.2. Raincoat / Wind breakerAs long your jacket comes with a hood behind, you'll be safe. Remember its almost raining most of the time during Winter so if you want to avoid bring a brolly around, then wear a raincoat. You don't have to bring along toilet paper everytime you travel around unless its for your running nose. There was not a single toilet I have been that do not have toilet paper. I'm not sure if public toilets are equipped with toilet paper or not. Everyone should bring an extra battery if you have a digital...

T-Shirts

by SirRichard

T-Shirts with no sleeves turned out to be very useful in the hot Greek summers. I didn't carry any, but I bought this one as a souvenir, and at the end had to buy another one, as I had to use this (which I still keep at home) for me!

Book tip for Greece

by miedje

Louis de Bernieres - Captain Corelli's Mandolin:This book is situated on a Greek island. It's a beautiful book about a romance in the war and especially about the life on a Greek island in the forties. I don't like common lovestories, but this is really a beautiful book. I can recommend it to everyone.Futhermore I can recommend all the books written in the ancient Greece. Read a book with the collected mythology. Or read one of the tragedies of Aeschylos, Sophocles or Euripides (I recommend Antigone of Sophocles, or Oedipous Rex). You could also try Plato or Aristotle, though it may be 'hard work'. I read the Replubic and it's really illuminating. And of course you could read Homer. Iliad and the Odyssee will never loose their attraction.

off season clothes

by SzaraManisha

while going there in winter or late autumn, dont forget to take with you the warm clothes as well as scarf, gloves and good shoes. There are places where is snow during the winter, but usually it is a bit rainy and windy. Dont exagerrate though, there happen days with 20 centigrades during the wintertime so dont forget to take also lighter clothes like t-shirts and fleece

The health services are good

by dedeckerm.

You should feel perfectly safe to eat and drink everything and the tap water is safe. The health services are good and you will be able to find an English-speaking doctor easily. Residents of EU countries are eligible to receive free emergency medical care. Medical insurance is always a good idea for additional cover.
