Forget your film? Forget your budget!

by mcbeck

Film in Greece is incredibly expensive - in some places, it's 3 times what you might pay in the States. Buy all your film before you leave! If you're fair skinned like me, be sure to bring lots and lots of SPF 45 sunblock. And, for God's sake, apply it OFTEN! You'll see plenty of people there who haven't heeded this advice and, believe me, they're some of the most miserable people you'll ever meet. Imagine being in paradise and unable to move your limbs without succombing to the worst burn of your life.

About Sun

by Edu_G

Everybody complains about sun burns, but if you are spanish, italian, portuguese or from south France you don't need special care. It's just like in your country. Films are really expensive in Greece. Tissues or toillet paper. See warning to know why!!!

Regular not big, bags are handy there. Remember that a light sweater, jacket or cardigan is useful even in summer, as the sea breezes can get quite chilly in the evenings.Pack or buy locally a pair of: a)sandals - they are appropriate day or night; b) plastic shoes for the sea they can be real 'life savers'when swimming In waters containing rocks or sea urchins; c) comfortable, rubber soled shoes - they are highly recommended. The health services are good and you will be able to find an English speaking doctor easily. Always wear a sunhat and a suntan lotion when sunbathing swimming or even sightseeing. Highly recommended get the right batteries, and 220 volt re-charger. Each year hundreds, if not thousands, of tourists are badly burned by trying to tan too quickly or not paying the necessary attention while sunbathing. So be warned and be careful. Always wear a sunhat and a suntan...

This human did not need anything: just sun, fire and meal. He rested upon his own claws and teeth. Don’t trust his sad eyes, he lived perfectly his long 25 years in the caves of Greece 700 thousand years ago (you can ask him about it in the museum of Petralon Caves). He has been much happier than majority of modern people who make long packing lists. Really hard work. But the problem is solved. Just ask a simple Greek what should you take to Greece with yourself, he’ll answer: “You can find everything in Greece!” Well, take some medicines with yourself. It may happen that some medicines are not imported into a country, or they exist under a different name.Be prepared to catch cold, most of tourists cough and sneeze because of conditioners.

Changing Money in GreeceThere are banks on the islands and some hotels will change money too but check rates and commissions. There are also ATM machines but don't rely on them since if they break on Friday they won't be fixed until Monday (at least). Always have a reserve. Changing dollars is not a big deal. There are roughly 300 drachma to the dollar but the rate fluctuates almost daily so keep your eye on the rates posted in the banks and English language papers.

A suitcase or two depending how big the party is. Put it this way, you wont be needing jumpers!Casual stuff is the best stuff to take, and don't take anything expensive as you'll feel way to overdressed..trust me! Aftersun!Sun creams being the obvious. Plasters, insect reppelent. A decent camera. We took 2, a normal one and a digital camera. If you take a digital...get a charger pack for rechargable batterys...they do come in useful as all the pictures on my site were used a digital camera. A torch for the power cuts at night!!!(picture taken in a power cut)

Family Travel Suntan cream, use a high factor to start with and gradually work down.It might be best to buy this before you travel as it will probably be cheaper. Also a fully stocked medical kit,a visit to the doctors or hospital can cost you a fortune. If you take electrical items to greece you will need a 2 pin travel adaptor.Next comes a sink plug, yes thats what i said a sink plug.Believe it or not i could not find one anywhere,i think it has something to do with the religion and that they have to bath in clear running water.Beach sandles are a must, you can't walk on the sand in mid summer, its so hot it will take the sole's off your feet. And finally before you leave,do not pack your suitcase so tight that you can hardly shut the thing, you will need a bit off space for gifts and shopping(you know, all the cheap crap you bring home and never use or see again).

sturdy baggage, though we used hold-all types. Well packed you may get away with it, but it's hearing them thud to the carousel floor at the airports that worries me !! Light stuff.... cool stuff Mozzie stuff if you go when its hot. May and September might be fine, but inbetween... eeewwww.. eaten alive!!Watch out for the loo role aswell... you're not supposed to put it down the loo, it should go in a bin by the side.... can't handle that one at all well!! I took a litttle digital camera, a Sony DSC P50. Fair doos, I had extra memory (64Mb stick) and an intelligent battery, but it did over 300 piccies and some movie aswell. In Corfu, footwear neede for the East coast, can get a bit rocky, Sandy beaches are more often found on the West coast Puzzle book and Pork Scratchings!! ;-)

Travel light: One back pack per person and one small suitcase should be enough for a whole family for two months. One pair of athletic shoes (you can buy a cheap pair of sandals in Greece) and 6 pairs of socks. 4 T-shirts, two pairs of shorts (not too colorful), two bathing suits, one (no more) pair of blue jeans, 6 pairs of underware. Wash socks, underware and one T-shirt every night in the hotel sink with hand soap. It takes 5 minutes and everything is crisp and nice smelling in the morning :)) Don't bother taking a watch along, because your daughter will either drop it from high up, or she will throw it in the sea (Try it if you don't believe me). You can find the same shavers and shampoos and toothpastes you use at home at any supermarket in Greece, so save yourself the trouble. I do buy 30-50 rolls of film before I fly to Greece and it is never enough. Film is very expensive in...
