In your own country, by sandals that are water resistant and that don't slip of. You'll need them if you want to see the nice snorkling places Crete has! There are not many beaches and they are mostly small so those beaches are full of tourists. There other rocky places that let you reach the sea, where the water is clean, so clean you can see 6 to 10 meters deep. You'll need the sandels to get in and out of the water and even to swim with. Have some moskito repelant. They haven't invented moskito nets yet.

a backpacker or a small rucksack. Good shoes!!! Especially for the mountains. It wouldn't be very wrong to hane a raincoat, when you travel in October. You need swimwear, something for your head, a hat is good.
