Things to Do

Cloisters

Cloisters, Panormitis

steventilly Says:  In true ecclesiastical terms I don't think these are "cloisters", they're actually the accomodation cells of the monastery. They're set on two or three levels and are rather attractive looking (from the outside). On the ground floor some of the rooms serve administration...

Attractive Archways

Attractive Archways, Panormitis

steventilly Says:  There are a variety of attractive archways leading into and out of the monastery grounds. Most provide good photo opportunities and some are quite decorative in their own right.

"Wedding Cake" Spire

"Wedding Cake" Spire, Panormitis

steventilly Says:  The most noticable thing about the monastery is its spire. The spire is lovely, being of typical "wedding cake" design seen throughout the Dodecanese. It's not particularly ancient, or historic, but it is certainly beautiful.

Hotels

Panormitis Monastery: Free Board For Pilgrims

Panormitis Monastery: Free Board For Pilgrims, Panormitis

steventilly Says:  The buildings that you see here around the monastery house basic accomodation. Know as "cells" they're available for short stays for those making a pilgrimage and are fairly basic. I didn't stay here, I was only on a day trip, so I can't comment about their comfort. Whilst...

Restaurants

Taverna/Shop: Taverna/Shop

Taverna/Shop: Taverna/Shop, Panormitis

steventilly Says:  There's a basic taverna and shop on site at the monastery. We were having a BBQ/Picnic later so we didn't have much to eat, we just bought a tub of ice cream and ate it on the promenade in front of the monastery. It was lovely - great ice cream and great views.

Transportation

Better By Boat

Better By Boat, Panormitis

steventilly Says:  Panormitis is at the far end of the island from Symi town so it's out of walking distance. You can get there by hiring a scooter or car, taking a taxi or bus, or by going on a boat trip. The latter was our preferred option. Panormitis is a place of pilgrimage for all Greek...

Shopping

Local Fishermen: Fresh Fish

Local Fishermen: Fresh Fish, Panormitis

steventilly Says:  If you're there at the right time you can buy fish from some of the fishermen who call at the monastery. A girl from our boat bought some, and the woman who sold her it was very friendly and very talkative (though it was all in Greek). The captain of oir tour boat was kind...

The Bakery: Fresh Bread

The Bakery: Fresh Bread, Panormitis

steventilly Says:  If you delve around the few streets and alleys around the monastery you'll find the bakery. Don't expect anything too flash - not much in the way of cakes and pastries - but lots of lovely, rustic, traditionally coooked bread. If you're on a trip like us, buy a loaf to bulk...

Off The Beaten Path

Windmill Island

Windmill Island, Panormitis

steventilly Says:  On a small islet as you approach the monastery by sea is a picturesque whitewashed windmill. This is in better condition than a lot of windmills on the island (and on Rhodes), even still having it's sail blades. Next to it is the obligatory Greek lookout post. Those Turks...
