Favorite thing: Anafiotika is the area located on the slopes of Acropolis, south Plaka. The name derives from the inhabitants of the island Anafi (Cyclades) who moved here at the beginning around 1830 afther the Hellenic Revolution.
The houses are built in typical (white-washed) Cycladic style.
Favorite thing: Olive trees and olive oil have to be the number one item Greece is known for.....the Acroplois is lined with them.
Fondest memory: i did not see the olive trees, although my friend mentioned it after the fact...........they were there, but just like the mesquite trees in Texas, unless pointed out, I would miss them.
They are very special to the greeks because in the original Olympics, the leaves were given as the prize........no gold medals, but olive leaves......
The social center of modern Athens!
Favorite thing: Plaka is filled with eateries, shopping and entertainment.
Off the Plaka lies the ruins of Agora, an ancient marketplace that was the center of social and civic life centuries ago.
Fondest memory: Getting lost!
Trying to find it, I found the city next to it called Monastiraki which is filled with small shops and has a flea market also.
Favorite thing: As I have already mentionned i a previous tip, in Plaka you will admire the amazing houses some of them renovated some of them not.
Nowadays, to buy one neoclassical house in Plaka is very expensive unless you are of the lucky ones who inherited it from the grandparents.
The Lantern of Diogenis (To Fanari tou Diogeni)
Favorite thing: Monument erected by Lusicrates on the west side of Tripodon street, in 335-34 B.C..
The monument is also known as “ Lantern of Diogenis” (To Fanari tou Diogeni)
- Family Travel
Favorite thing: In Kythathineon street you will see the Amphitheatre.
In the square you can find a lovely coffee shop to have a rest or a cute, picturesque taverna for lunch or dinner.
Favorite thing: While walking you will see archaelogical areas like the one on the picture. It's true that Athens and especially Plaka is full of them.
Favorite thing: As soon as you arrive there don't search immediately for a coffee shop or a taverna to sit down. Have a round first to see the best of Plaka.
Entrance from Syntagma
Favorite thing: You have many possibilities to access Plaka. This is one of the entrances through Syntagma from Amalias Avenue.
