Walking down the small paved stone street of Adrianou St(for Hadrian) lined with tourist gift shops and tavernas, we arrive at the ruins of the Ancient Roman Agora. Funded by Caesar and Augustus in 1st century BC.
Follow the block around to find Hadrian's Library in ruins. This is the same guy famous for the "Scottish" border wall against the Picts!
This archaology is part of the life surrounds of my friend and is dated 131 A.D. It was a cultural complex of reading rooms, lecture halls, gardens and public square.
You realise that this little pedestrian friendly village underneath the Acropolis has experienced three major civilisations, the Greek, Roman and Turkish.
It was wonderful to sit thinking of the best part of these Occupations, whilst drinking Greek beer and/or some Ouzzo in the homeland, at dusk in such surroundings time travelling on the sidewalk of our minds.....

Being puppeteers, it was a great surprise to find an established puppet theatre a walk from our hotel in Plaka! It's all in Greek but that doesn't matter! The puppetter who was performing Karioghos the shadow puppet play had plenty of vocal professionalism and puppetry skill for you to know what was happening,(and you laugh with the kids anyway!).
They have a repertoire of shows, traditional and modern, so do check them out if they are performing whilst you are in town.
You will also find some handpainted shadow puppets from this story at the shop next door to the Adonis Hotel in Plaka.

This octagonal marble structure was built nearly fifty years before the birth of Christ.
Each of the wind's directions has a separate relief carving of a deity (north, northeast, east, southeast, south, southwest, west, and northwest)
Furthermore, each of these deities has a name:
North
Boreas
He blows the cold north wind through a large conch shell.
Northeast
Kaikias
Look out below! This deity dude is dropping hailstones on Hellas.
East
Euros
Old man with a beard carrying a blanket.
Southeast
Apeliotes
Clean shaven young man bringing fruits and grain
South
Notos
Rain Man; this deity is ready to pour an amphora of water on Athens!
Southwest
Lips
Young fellow steering the stern of a ship with promise of a good sailing wind
West
Zephyros
Flower Child dropping spring blossoms on bosoms of Greek goddesses
Northwest
Skiron
Bearded man with a bronze cauldron

In a so touristic place like Plaka, it's really difficult to find authentic greek food, cooked in the traditional way. A place that cannot easily be found from mass, although it is almost beside the museum of popular musical instruments. Known for its quality, "Platanos tavern" offers you some traditional greek dishes you don't easily find in touristic places. It is in Plaka area (Aerides) and it is a cool place having its tables under a platan tree.

Well after walking around carrying the gifts, and shopping and talking to the shopkeepers, you will probably feel a little tired.
To tell the truth, if we speak about me, I feel exhausted and I'm definetely hungry!
The real dilemma is what I would like for lunch.
I have three alternatives:
1. suvlaki & beer
2. variety of small things and ouzo
3. greek cooked food
Whatever I decide, I know that I will not regret it.
Let's check each one of my alternatives and choose together where we will have lunch!

I understand you. After drinking and eating, everybody wants some sleep. You may feel uncomfortable to admit it, as you NEVER sleep during day time, but if you had a happy full day, like mine, in Plaka and Monastiraki area, shopping, walking, watching, taking part, drinking, eating, making friends under the hot sun, I'm sure you would run at your hotel not seeing the time for a shower and a nap!
So do I! So, let me have my siesta and then we will go out again to describe you my perfect evening! :)
C U soon!
Bye for nowwww!

I would rather prefer to go there at evening and meet many young people drinking their wine , singing and eating increadibly delicious dishes of small things.
Scholarheio is very known place in Plaka and very popular among young people. Good quality in very friendly prices.
The decoration of the place is coming from old times and reminds the old good times when even the most poor was able to go to tavern and drink a glass of wine eating some tidbits.
I strongly recomend you to go and have some wine and peekelia there!
But if it is full, try "cafeneo" that is beside!

Do you prefer ouzo? the traditional drink of Greece? It's strong! Drink it with water and ice and before you be entrapped to anise's charm, order a peekelia to accompany it! Drink it slowly, while eating and feel its pleasent power.
The right place for a glass of ouzo is everywhere in Greece, but if you are near Monastiraki - Plaka, "Dioskouroi cafe" on your way to Akropolis (Adrianou str. I think) is the place where you will find a nice peekelia and ouzo in the open air having a nice view of ancient market.

If you feel like having a superb rich meal with meat, the right place for you is Savvas' restaurant in Monastiraki square (Metropoleos str.)
Try his "yiaurtlu" (4 kebab on a pie with tomato sause and yoghurt) accompanied with a greek salad and beer and perhaps his "lahmatzun"!
Marvelous combination!!!!!!!!!
