This bridge is widely considered to be an engineering masterpiece owing to several solutions applied to span the difficult site. The Rio-Antirio Bridge connects Patras' easternmost suburb of Rio to the town of Antirrio, connecting the Peloponnese peninsula with mainland Greece.
The Rio-Antirio bridge officially called "Charilaos Trikoupis" bridge after the statesman who first envisioned it. This is a cable-stayed bridge crossing the Gulf of Corinth.

The 2,880 meters long bridge improves access to and from the Peloponnese, which could previously be reached only by ferry or via the Isthmus of Corinth at its extreme east end. Its width is 28 m.

Although the present rather hideous church was only built after World War II, the mosaics give a vivid picture of old Patra. The church's capacity is 5.500 persons.

Inside this church are preserved the remains of St. Andrew the Apostle. These are located in a small chapel to the back right of the church as you face the front. The remains of his X-shaped cross are kept behind it.

In the mid-4th century, on the initiative of Emperor Constantine, the Holy Relics was transferred to St Apostles' Church in Constantinople. When the Franks occupied the city, the Relics were transferred to Italy. On September 26th 1964, the Saint's Head returned to Patras by Pope Paul and after the actions that the citizens of Patras and the Orthodox Church took.

The relics, which consist of the small finger, part of the top of the cranium of Saint Andrew and small parts of the cross, have since that time been kept in the special shrine.

The two churches dedicated to Patras' patron Saint, St Andrew, constitute a national and Pan-Orthodox place of pilgrimage. The small Church was erected during the 1836-1843 period at the spot where Apostle Andrew died a martyr.

The new magnificent Byzantine church was founded in 1908 by King George I and inaugurated in 1974. It is the largest and most artistic church in the Balkans and one of the largest across Europe. The Church's central dome is 46m high and supports a five meter high gold-plated cross and twelve smaller ones, symbolizing Jesus and his twelve disciples respectively.

Next to the old Church it is located Saint Andrew's well. At this spot it used to be located Dimitra's spring, where it operated an oracle for sick people.
The region of the divining spring was the place where Apostle Andrew was teaching. According to tradition he was crucified next to this spring.

The city is built at the foothills of Mount Panachaikon which is the northernmost mountain range in the Peloponnese. Patras is overlooking the Gulf of Patras.

It is 40–50 km long, 10–20 km wide. The Port of Patras lies to the southeast and is the only major port on the gulf. It serves ferries to Ancona and Brindisi in Italy.

A c h a i a C l a u s s is an old wine-product company . Achaia Clauss was founded in 1861 by the Clauss Gustav. At the area there used to be vineyards of red grapes (called Mavrodafne). It has an old big cellar, some of the wines are from 1873. You must visit it to drink some of the wines and buy them if you want. It is some kilometers from the Patras' centre . The 'Achaia Clauss' wine company name is popular not only in Greece but also in all over the world. Around 100,000 visitors arrive every year at the Northern heights of Patras to admire ACHAIA CLAUSS and buy the famous wine 'Mavrodafne' and the others wines of Achaia Clauss.

    K A L A V R I T A :

It's a small, relaxing, wonderful city over the mountains, just a few kilometres from Patras.
Very historical place, bring back a lot of memmories for all the Greeks.
You can go there by car (national road).
But the better way is to take the railway of Diakopto - Kalavrita.
It's an old diesel railway (from 1896) that's going next to Vouraikos river.
Amazing drive through caves, up and down the mountains.

Take a look at the Great Spileon and Agia Lavra's church (stop in Zachloru and then climb to see the monasteries).

(come back later to see my new travelogue)

I envy her! Do you know why?

She was utterly happy just because I wanted to take a photo of her. The kind of simple happiness that so many of us have lost touch with!

Then I felt happy as well... I've made her happy even if it's only for a few minutes that very day :-)

    Simplicity is beauty...

Finishing his Apostolic trip St.Andreas came in Patras (years of Neronas). He was crousified at the year of 68 a.C. at the age of 80. The Cathedral's laying of foundation began at the first June of 1908. The new laying of foundation began in 1934 and the central dome was raised. The Cathedral's plan was changed in 1945 to be more Byzantine. The new Cathedral of St.Adreas was inaugurated in 1974.

    A n c i e n t O d e i o n o f P a t r a s:
It was built shortly before the Odeum of Herodes Atticus, known as the 'Herodeion', in Athens (161 A.D.) and is smaller than the Athenian monument. Ancient Odeum is one of the most beautiful arhaelogical odeums in Greece. The cavea has four rows of seats in the lower section and seven in the upper part, over the diazoma. The outer, tall wall of the skene has five entrances to the skene and the lateral buildings (paraskenia). Access to the proskenion is gained through two built stairways, one on the left and one on the right side. The orchestra is paved and is separated from the cavea by a semicircular parapet. The Odeum was revealed in 1889. Until then it was completely covered with earth. Only a small-scale excavation has been carried out on the site. The monument was repaired and again dressed with marble slabs after World War II. During the summer the Odeum is employed for music concerts and theatrical performances.

    C A S T L E O F P A T R A S :
The castle of Patras was built in the second half of the 6th century A.D. on the ruins of the ancient Acropolis. In A.D. 805 the inhabitants of the city were besieged in the castle by the Slavs and Saracens and their victory, considered a miracle of the city's patron saint Andrew, was important for repelling the barbarian invasions in Peloponnese. In the following centuries the castle, which remained continuously in use until the Second World War for the defense of the city, as well as an administrative and military centre, was captured by the Franks, Venetians, Palaiologoi and Turks.

The castle consists of a triangular outer enclosure reinforced with towers and bastions, which was originally protected by a deep moat and an inner enclosure rising on the N.E. angle and protected by a moat as well. The building phases distinguishable today on the castle provide evidence for the works carried out by each of its conquerors as repairs and provisions according to the development of military science. The original construction is visible today mainly along the north wall, but remains of it exist on all three sides of the curtain indicating that the original medieval fortification had more or less the same perimeter.
