On 28th January 2005, six months after the opening of the bridge, one of the cable links of the bridge snapped from the top of the pylon and came crashing down on the deck. Traffic was immediately halted. The first investigation claimed that a fire had broken out on the top of the pylon, after a lightning strike in one of the cables. The cable was immediately restored and the bridge re-opened.

Another danger is of that the Gulf of Corinth is expanding at a rate of about 30 mm a year. For these reasons, special construction techniques were applied when the Rio-Antirio Bridge was constructed. Nevertheless one should be aware when crossing the Bridge!

    Mind the road

  • Patras itself is safe, like most Greek cities. However, some roads in and around Patras can be very tricky. As you drive there from Athens, the expressway (to be upgraded to motorway in the near future) is mostly one-lane-per-direction, meaning that overtaking is a dreaded necessity. Similar risks exist also in the extension of that road towards the South-West - and it's not even an expressway. Finally, within the town there are a couple of S-curves that are worth mentioning: one along Kanellopoulou avenue (the road leading to the port) and another near the St. Andrew's orthodox cathedral (only in the inbound direction).
