Bourtzi is a small castle on the sea. It was built in 1473 in order to protect the entrance of the harbor. When Othon, son of the Bavarian king Loudovic became the firstking of the modern Greece, he applied the death penalty and the castle was used as the residence of the hangmen. Now it hosts summer concerts. Small boats transfer everyone who wants to visit the castle.

Nafplio was established by the mythological hero Nafplios, son of Amimoni and Poseidon, the god of the sea. During the Mycenean period, the town was a powerful marine state. In Medieval Nafplio was under the occupation of the Venetians and the Franks. Nafplio was also the first capital of the modern Greece. In 1822, Staikos Staikopoulos liberated Nafplio from the Turkish occupation. The town became the first capital of Greece until 1834. Located at the feet of two fortresses, Palamidi and Akronafplia, Nafplio is now is a small, picturesque town of 17.000 residents

The Archeological Museum of Nafplio was built in 1713. It was used by the Venetians as barracks. Now it hosts remarkable exhibits of the early Greek period (up to 2000 B. C.) and the Mycenean period, and also exhibits of the prehistoric settlements of the area. One of the exhibits is a unique copper armor, dated from the 1400 B.C.

Trianon was built in 1600 and at first it was a mosque. During the second period of the Venetian occupation the capuchin monks used it as a catholic church. In 1826 the building was operated as a school. Now hosts the performances of the local theatrical team, and also artistic exhibitions.

The fortifications of Palamidi were completed in 3 years (1711-1714.) Grimani made the initial plans, but Agostino Sagredo finished the task later. After the liberation the castle was used as a prison. Palamidi is constituted of eight bastions. The view from the fortress is magnificent! If you are in a good shape, you can climb the 857 steps to the castle. For the rest, there is a road that leads to one of the entrances, so you can go by car.

The old town of Nafplio is filled with narrow cobblestoned streets. It is simply A STROLLER'S DELIGHT. It's a pleasure to wander along the harbour, watch fishing boats unloading their day's catch, go up and down the stepped side streets, explore their small churches, gaze in wonder at the balconies overflowing with bouganvillias and just take in all that Nafplio has to offer.

Syntagma square predominates in the center of Nafplio. It is surrounded by beautiful café’s and picturesque taverns, as well as remarkable sights such as the palace of the first Greek governer, called Ioannis Kapodistrias, the house of the founder of the Greek rebellion of 1821 Theodor Kolokotronis, the old muslin templar as well as the St.George’s church.

Moreover, visitors can also visit the old parliament and last but not least the magnificent building of Armeria, which nowadays functions as a museum where exhibits of nearby archaeological places are being hosted.

Just a bit further Syntagma square stands St.Spiridonas church where Ioannis Kapodistrias was murdered, a chaplet museum and some lovely small taverns.

Akronafplia is the oldest part of the city of Nafplio. This is the ancient name with which, along with the Turkish one Itch-Kale, the acropolis of Nauplio is known.

Until the XIIIth century, there was a town on its own. The arrival of the Venetians and the Franks transformed it into part of the town fortifications. Later, part of it was used as a prison. Tourist works are now taking place at the area.

The Greek government decided that the view provided from its location would benefit the local tourism and it was right. Views from Akronafplia on the city and over the Argolic Gulf and the castle of Palamidi are really magnificent!

The castle of Bourtzi is located in the middle of the harbour of Nafplio. At first it was called by the seamen Saint Theodore's island. During the first Venetian rule (1389 1540), in 1473 to be particular, the Venetians built a tower with guns on it. It was called the Castelli or Bourdji and later Passage. New fortifications were added during the second venetian rule (a tower with a yard and a bastion).

The Greeks regained it from the Turks in 1822, from where they assisted in the siege of Nafplio. Until 1865 it served as a fortress. It was then transformed into residence of the executioners of convicts from the castle Palamidi.

Originally built as a prison by the Venetians, Bourtzi is nowadays one of the most well-known landmarks of Nafplio. It is easily accessible and the view from its turrets is of great beauty.

The castle of Palamidi, built by the Venetians, was originally used as a fortress but later it was used as a prison. It became the infamous Itch Kale, where Kolokotronis (hero of the Greek revolution) was imprisoned. It is a massive building which dominates the landscape over the city, impressing everyone visiting Nafplio.

The Venetians retook Nafplio in 1685, and strengthened the city by building the castle of Palamidi, which was in fact the last major construction of the Venetian empire overseas. However, only 80 soldiers were assigned to defend the city and it was easily retaken by the Ottomans in 1715.

Romantics can climb up all 999 steps, that were rebuilt in Otho's period.
