The national road of Athens-Korinthos (E94) leads to Peloponnesus. Keep driving on the national road for about 50km, then you have to exit the national road when you see the outgo to Nafplio then move on the E65 national road. Keep driving for about 40km and exit on either the Nemea or Sterna outgo. After driving on that road for around 30km you will arrive to Nafplio.

You may also reach Nafplio by bus from Athens (1 time an hour; 2,30 hours in a way for 8 euro).

We reached Nafplio by excursion bus which you may see on my second pic while we explored the Acronauplia.

There are buses departing Nafplio for Mycenae few times a day.
In May 2008 we took a 10am bus and came back on a 12pm one I think.

The journey takes about 1 hour. Bus brings you directly to the site - its the last stop.
You do not need to buy tickets in advance, just purchase it on the bus. On way ticket costs 2.60 euro.

Entrance tickets for museum cost 8 euro per person.

NOTE: The sign for bus station is KTEЛ.

As of May, 2008 there were no direct buses from Meteora to Nafplio, so we had to take a train to Athens first (at 6.30am for the price of 20.30 euro each).
Arrived in Athens at 11.30am, took a taxi (5 euro) which brought us to the bus terminal A. Bought our tickets at the window (looked for the sign - Nafplio - cause each window sells tickets to different destinations) and almost immediately hopped on a bus (at 12.30pm departing from the gate 37).

Payed 11.80 euro per person for one way ticket.

Spent total: 34.10 euro on transportation per person.

There are buses departing Nafplio for Athens every hour or so.
The journey takes about 2,5 hours. We took a 10am bus and arrived in Athens around 12.30pm.
Unlike Epidaurus/Mycenae buses, you buy tickets at the tickets office next to buses.
PRICE: In May 2008 one way ticket cost 11.80 euro.

In Athens driver dropped us off at the downtown, next to the subway (I think it was Panepistimio station). The subway system is very easy to figure out and has a lot of lines, so it was very convenient and took us only 10 minutes or so to get to Plaka district.

There are buses departing Nafplio for Epidaurus few times a day.
    In May 2008 their schedule was: 10.15am, 12pm, 2.30pm.
    From Epidaurus to Nafplio: 12pm, 1pm, 3.45pm, 6pm.

The journey takes about 45 minutes.
You do not need to buy tickets in advance, just purchase it on the bus. On way ticket costs 2.60 euro.

We took a 10.15am bus and came back on the 1pm one. It was plenty of time to see the theater and ruins.

Entrance tickets for museum cost 6 euro per person.

NOTE: Buses for Epidaurus do not leave from the usual place in front of the ticket office. I drew a map to show their location. I do not know however if it is a permanent situation or it just happened when we were there. I recommend you to check it just in case.

It is just a... tourist line, ideal if you have children with you. This train goes around some places into the town in a few minutes.

    Bus from Nafplio to Mycenae
  • By iwearconverse on April 6, 2008
  • Nafplio Page by iwearconverse
  • the bus actually does go to the site of mycenae and the modern village of mikines twice a day. i believe they arrive in the village at 11 and 3, in front of La Belle Helene (one of the small hotels in the village, and one where you're most likely to find a room on the spur of the moment, unless there's a large German tour group taking the place over). These are the two buses that actually go to Nafplio. The bus stops in Fichtia about once an hour to hour and a half, in front of the main kafenia in the village turn-around. However, it isn't a main stop, so you have to make sure the driver knows you want to get off there and be very alert. There's really no way to get to Mikines from Fichtia except to walk or hire a cab. Also, the guidebooks may tell you there's a train opening, but that's false. The train stops at Corinth, and won't open for another several years. The people in the kafenia can call you one. I wouldn't try to walk to the site of Mycenae from the village, especially during the day, unless you're interested in a pretty strenuous hike. A half day would be fine if you're just there to see it, but you may run into a bus-timing problem. The village is lovely, though, regardless of what the guidebooks say. I've worked at Mycenae for two summers now, and I love the village.

Because of the lack of trains in and around Nauplion you better rent a car. Good for visiting Epidauros or Mycene for example.
