Gemelos Tavern: Good food with view over Corinth

by oriettaIT

This restaurant was a great surprise! It is on the square at the site exit and it have this nice terrace with the view of the ruins. It also have a big sign with picture of the food.. all those are usually sign that put me off as I start thinking it is a tourist place, read average/bad food.We decided to try it anyway because we were overheated, deadly tired after climbing up and the down the ruin and extemely hungry. It turned out to be a good place! The terrace had a great view as you can see in the pic and there was a nice breeze, much appreciated after all that sweating in the boiling hot august morning. We had greek salad, Gemista that is tomatoes and pepper stuffed with rice and a plate of pork kebab that came with tzatziky, fries and tomatoe slices. We also had water and half a liter of win and payed around 25 euros.

Vasilis Taverna: Great traditional food in Nafplion

by oriettaIT

This tavern have been suggested to us by our good friend Anna (vt Anpe). It is a old taverna in a pedestrian street behind Syntagma square. It was a very hot evening and they had tables on the streets and several fan vaporizing water to keep it cooler. The dining area inside is well decorated with old photos interesting to watch. The waiters speak a good english and the menu have a wide selection of greek specialties, vegetables meat and fish. We ordered Tzatziky, dolmadakia, meat balls and aubergine imam that is a eggplant boat stuffed with cheese and cook in the oven. The food was presented nicely and very good and tasty. The meatballs (Soutzoukakia) were probably the best we had during this trip.We payed about 30 for two people including beer.

?: Very Greek....

by nickandchris

I had a wander along the seafront at Kilada and had a look at various menus. As two of the restaurants were psarotavernas we opted for the third one which was a tsistaria. It was a very Greek place, with non too swift service, which made a refreshing change from being rushed in to making our choice. The girl didn't speak a word of English which was unusual in this day and age but we relished the fact. The menu board had English on it but in the hand menu, some things were added only in Greek.Next to the restaurant was a children's play area which was useful for keeping Philip occupied as we sat and admired our surroundings.Next door we watched the local fishmonger hang his oktopodi out to dry. Of course, today we really fancied gigantes but it wasn't to be! In the end we opted for cheese croquets, tzadziki and plain, boiled courgettes. No, I'm not a veggie but it made a change to have...

O Spiros: Fresh Lamb, Chicken, Pork and Kokoretsi

by janetanne

If you love meat and haven't tried Kokoretsi, you haven't eaten real Greek food! Don't ask what it is, just taste! Be brave! It is wonderful in small amounts. All the meat is good but I do prefer the lamb; something I rarely cook at home, so do try to take advantage of such an opportunity as this. So fresh you can almost hear....no, I won't go there:):)

Pystaria O Spiros-Spiro's Rotissary: Fresher Meat found only walking through the field!

by janetanne

Almost every Athenian comes originally from a village. When Greeks travel from the city to their village, they will undoubtedly bring back 'local food supplies' from the village and most definitely they will eat at the local restaurant that is also a local butcher. This road-side restaurant on the road to Porto Heli and Spetsis is just one of those places where you will eat a fantastic, clean and simple meal of fresh roast lamb or pork plus all the usual trimmings...potatoes, salad and local wine. After you have eaten, don't forget to buy some of the local homemade egg noodles and sweet honey. Fresh Feta made from the local goats,is also a must for cheese lovers. Lamb from the spit is definitely the best and should be ordered by the weight..ie. 1/2 kilo is probably good for 2 normal people...and I say normal meaning that it is not uncommon for two large people to eat 1 kilo between them...

O Spiros: Fresh Local Meat

Wonderful, tasty, not overcooked, not undercooked meat; clean, comfortable, fast service, not too expensive, not too cheap....just right! Lamb on the grill.
