Olympic is the national airline of Greece and flies to many major international cities and within Greece. If you fly within Greece, chances are you will be flying on Olympic. They have an excellent safety record.
I have flown Olympic a few times and have had mixed results with them. Some flights have been great with no complaints, on others I have been treated like a passenger on the Saturday Night Live skit with the rude flight attendants (some of you should know what I am talking about ).

We flew from Venice to Athens with Alpie Eagles, a no frills air carrier. They may not serve dinner, but they have extremely nice stewardesses, who offered Red Bull caffine induced drinks, as well as coffee, tea, and a tiny, tiny package of cookies.
The cabin interior was spotless, and the seats were covered in real leather, as opposed to the grimy cloth material found on most carriers.
Cost was 29 euro one way.
You board from a designated 'gate' like all flights, but instead of an airplane at the end of the corridor, you catch an air conditioned bus which takes you directly to the plane. Very easy. A one minute ride.

There is now only one airport in Athens, called 'Eleftherios Venizelos'. It serves all domestic & international destinations for all airline companies.
A taxi from the city centre to the new airport costs approx. GRD 7000 one way (Euros 20!) and there's also a bus which costs GRD 1000 (Euros 3!) one way.

The fastest way to travel to Athens is of course by plane. The airport is located about 20km from the city. The cheapest way to get to the city from the airport is by Airport bus. There are buses E94, E95 and E96 depending on what is their last stop within the city. The ticket is 2.90euros and it is valid for all means of transportation in the city (buses, trolleys and metro) within the next 24hours

Athens opened its new international airport today in 2001.
It is truly very modern, but a bit further out of town. There are frequent busses to the city center, but you may need more than an hour to Athens and two hrs to the port of Pireas.

The best way to reach Athens I think it's the plane, but a friend of mine say me to avoid the Olympic line, he said me to chose another airline.
For visit the city my advice is to walk by food, because the traffic. You can use also the bus.
If you'll use a car I want say you to beware at your right because the people can pass you from that side too. I dont' know if they can do it, but they do it.
