Neoclassical Trilogy (Academy-University-Library), Athens

Favorite thing: It was built between 1887 and 1902, based on a study of the Danish architect, Theophile Hansen. Hernest Ziller was the supervising architect who also studied the entrance stairways and the main bookstands. As early as in 1858, King Otho had ordered Hansen to make a study for the construction of a Library next to the University, that had already started being built. The building is considered to be a characteristic sample of mature Neoclassicism.

Favorite thing: The Academy, between Akadimias and Panepistimou (Venizelou) streets, is the most prestigious scientific organization in Greece and is considered as the modern continuation of the ancient Academy of Plato. You must be a genius to be a member of it...

Favorite thing: The building was designed by the Danish architect Theophile Hansen and was built between 1859-1887. Marble from Penteli was used for its construction (like for the Parthenon).
From time to time, restoration works have been taken place. These columnes are ionic order.

Favorite thing: The main entrance to the building of Academy of Athens (Panepistimiou 18, between Syntagma and Omonia) is flanked by two tall ionic columnes.
They carry the statues of Athena (look my intro, Athena, after whom the city is named, is the goddess of wisdom and knowledge) and Apollo, her brother. Apollo is the god of music, sun, arts...

Favorite thing: The most complete public library of Greece is located next to the University, it consummates the neoclassical trilogy (the third building is the Academy, all of them are between Akadimias street and Panepistimiou street).
The National Library was based on the study of Theophile Hansen and was built -with pentelic marble too- in 1887-1902. It is a megaron in the doric style and contains almost one million volumes of books, archetypals, manuscripts. Diagonally opposite the library is the Arsakeio, where the Council of State is housed.

Favorite thing: The central offices of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, like the Rectorate, the Archives, the Ceremonian Hall for official ceremonies -I took there my diploma!- are housed at this impressive building, which is among the Academy and the National Library.
It was designed by the Danish architect Cristian Hansen and was built between 1839-1864. It has propylaia with wall paintings of the renaissance of the arts and sciences in Greece (can you read the greek letters?). Statues have been erected in front of the University.

Favorite thing: It is a part of the dodecatheon, Athena is on the right of Zeus (this image can be seen on the top of the building, from its main entrance). Inside the Academy, which is a fine example of neoclassicism, the biggest room has murals which represent different moments from the myth of Promitheas.

Favorite thing: Our best sources of information about Socrates's philoshophical views (he lived between 469-399 BC) are the early dialogues of his student Plato. His statue is in front of the Academy, next to the statue of Plato. They guard the main staircase...

It is part of the so-called Neoclassical Trilogy of the City of Athens: Academy - University-Library. It was built between 1839 and 1864 based on the designs of the Danish architect Cristian Hansen (the same architect designed for the Academy) who was the supervisor of the construction at the beginning, to be followed afterwards by A. Theophilos and Kaftatzoglou. The wall-paintings on the facade were studied by the Bavarian painter Ral and executed by the Polish painter Lebietski.
Nowadays the building is used as the headquarters of the University of Athens.
