The changing of the Guard: Changing of the Guard
  • Tip Rating:
  • Every hour at Parliament Square you can see the Changing of the Guard.
The soldier called Euzone stand stright and still for an hour in front of the Ignote Souldier Monument. Than new soldiers come and both the old and the new couple of men walk around in kind of dance. Very interesting to see. They wear their traditional clothes that are different from anyone else in the world.
The area can get really crowded when the new hour is close, so better to come there a little bit early. The new group of soldier will come from your right side looking to the street.

Athens' own Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Syntagma Square...the Changing of the Guards ceremony takes place 24 hours a day, every hour, on the hour...you can't miss it...although we recommend watching during the day so you can capture the moments on film a bit easier.

The changing of the Guard: The Parliament guards guarding the unknown soldier
  • Tip Rating:
  • Changing of the guards at the Greek Parliament Building is great to watch.

They are at the Syntagma Square and they guard the "Unknown Soldier.

This was my first day there also, wandering around and trying to find places, pics, etc.

I asked the Captain over these soldiers if I could take a picture with them and he said Yes.

It was not too crowded when I was there, although I understand this is a MOST popular attraction. Just like Buckingham Palace changing of the guards is for tourist. I think this is MUCH more impressive than London.

The changing of the Guard: Changing of the guards
  • Tip Rating:
  • Look at the Greek soldiers, pom pom shoes and traditional uniform skirts.

My fondest memory of this event was scooting around trying to get the best picture as the Captain was telling the crowd to step back and he also was giving the soldiers direction what to do..........

The changing of the Guard: The guards
  • Tip Rating:
  • Such a picture is a typical one for any tourist in Athens... The guards are tall, well trained soldiers and belong to "Proedriki Froura", the guards of the President of Democracy (it is honorary for every Greek soldier to belong at it).
They wear these traditional uniform skirts and pompom shoes and guard the tomb of the unknown soldier - it is behind them, at the central Syntagma square. The change of the guards there is remarkable...

The changing of the Guard: Poor things are baking in the sun
  • Tip Rating:
  • Bring a camcoder to record the change of the guards. A photo camera does not do it justice.

The changing of the Guard: Exchanging Antonis for Dimitris
  • Tip Rating:
  • In front of the Greek Parliament building (located at Syntagma Square) you can watch the changing of the guards (no, they don't change their clothes - well, they do, but not in front of the Greek Parliament building. Neither do they change in the meaning of shapeshifting as Alice in Wonderland did). They change each other for someone else. It's quite an elaborate ceremony and looks a little like a Greek folk dance - just the Sirtaki dance tunes are missing.

The changing of the Guard: Changing of the Guard
Everyone knows about the famous guards in the funny outfits in Athens lol. You may take pictures etc etc, but I would ask tourist to respect the fact that these are soldiers just trying to finish their required military service, so please just try not to make their job difficult. thanks
