    The Cure

    The Cure!

The Rockwave Festival of 2002 was suddenly cancelled a few days before it starts and in its place the Shockwave Festival was created, just for one day.
At least, I had seen Mesh, Dandy Warhols and a favorite group of my teenage years, the Cure! (Foundation of the Hellenic World, 3/7/2002).

    This time, for Palestine...

The best moment of the concert...

It is a picture from another big concert at Syntagma square (10/4/2002), when many singers had been gathered to show that they desire peace for this tried hard region...
Haris (Haroula) Alexiou is on the left, one of the greatest female Greek singers, and Loreena McKennitt, the excellent voice of Canada, is on the right. She had come to Greece especially for that event. Their duet ("To tango tis Nefelis") was the best moment of the concert...

Despite the rain, the show must go on...

Although their name reminds of reggae, Jamaica, sun and summer, at the end of that nice night big rain-drops started to fall from the sky, even at the stage.
But the group continued to play its happy music... (Lycabettus Theater, 5/9/2001)

    Vasilis Papakonstantinou

by AndyRG Updated May 27, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    He is the best!

He is my favorite singer. Papakonstantinou (a big name!) was born in 1950, he is maybe the only alive rock star of the country, beloved especially by the young people.
Like G. Dalaras, he has given hundreds of concerts, even abroad, and many times he sings for political/social reasons (Elliniko, 20/9/2000).

    Marinella

by AndyRG Updated May 27, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

For more than 40 years, Marinella -the "big lady" of greek music- sings about love and pain. She has a lovely erotic voice, still remains a passionate woman.
At the picture, she is at the Olympic Indoor Hall, which was full of 20.000 fans of her (1/10/1999).

Markopoulos (on the left, wearing black clothes, next to the singer Garganourakis who holds a lyra) is one of the greatest Greek composers. He was born in Irakleio of Crete in 1939 and continues to creat perfect musical compositions, symphonic works, music for the theater and films.
Markopoulos gave a fresh look at the poetry of great Greek poets as Solomos, Seferis, Elytis. He has also composed the theme tune for the BBC series "Who pays the ferryman?" (Kotzia square, 6/6/1999).

    Domna Samiou

by AndyRG Updated May 27, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Domna Samiou (Nikos Karatasos is playing with his dulcimer -"santouri"- on the right) is the best representative of "dimotiko tragoudi", the old folk songs of Greece, from all its regions.
Since she was a young woman, Domna Samiou is always trying to make her compatriots love this traditional music more and more, it is a chance to be connected with their origins too (Gennadius Library, 22/2/1999).

    Mihalis Hatzigiannis

by AndyRG Written May 26, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

He was born in Nicosia of Cyprus in 1978. At the age of 17 he had already made his first cd. He is too popular as years pass by, he writes lyrics and music by himself. Hatzigiannis has been characterized as the "king of greek pop"... ("Zigos", 28/3/2003)

    Georgia, a great performer!

The group was formed in Thessaloniki in 1996 and reproduces jazz, funky and rock sounds. The leader and composer of it is Papapostolou George, but people know especially the... voices of the group, Theodosia Tsatsou (till 1998, when she started a solo career) and -since then- Georgia, a great performer! ("Gialino Mousiko Theatro", 19/1/2003)

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Frangoulis is not any more a big hope for the future of greek music, he has managed already his cds to be all over the world. He sings opera, classical songs, even popular (folk) ones. He also plays as an actor in ancient greek tragedies. M. Frangoulis has taken part in many concerts with famous orchestras (Olympic Indoor Hall, 30/1/2002).

    George Dalaras

by AndyRG Updated Dec 18, 2002

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

He is "the voice of Greece", the best seller Greek singer. George Dalaras was born in Piraeus in 1949 and since his first record (just in 1968) he has been all over the world representing almost all kinds of greek music (like folk songs, rembetiko, ballads), even latin songs etc. He has associated with famous orchestras too. Many times he sings by the chance of social problems or for political reasons - he is a personality of greater left political party (Peace and Friendship Stadium, 4/6/1998).

    What a concert...

by AndyRG Written Nov 21, 2002

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    All together...

More than 80 singers and actors had participated at this big concert at central Syntagma square (on 1/3/1999) and about 80.000 Athenians were singing with them. The reason was political (support to the people of Kurdistan), as usually happens...

by AndyRG Written Nov 21, 2002

    What a voice...

She has a magical voice, a multi talented Greek woman. She has studied archaeology and she is also an actress. Tania Tsanaklidou is sophisticated, charming, independent, she usually doesn't follow the orders of the musical industry... (Foundation of the Hellenic World, 13/2/1999)
