Stage Volume 1: Stage Volume 1

by mindcrime Written May 11, 2014

A new entry in town, Stage Volume 1 is a concert venue located at Psiri district, 130m from Monastiraki metro station which make it easily accesible. It opened in 2014 by Didi Music, a company that organizes concerts in Athens the last 30 years (also runs Rockwave Festival).

The venue can host about 1900 people, ideal for midsize bands… I guess we will see there bands we use to see in Gagarin or Fuzz (similar venues in Athens) or Rodon Club in the past. I hope the sound system to be on top level.
Some upcoming concerts in 2014 are Moonspell, Sepultura, HIM, Violent Femmes, Tuxedomoon

    Booze Cooperativa: Booze Cooperativa

by mindcrime Written May 9, 2014

Booze is a historical bar that is actually now a multi space with different layers (including the attached building) where local mostly unknown artists show their work. I have seen some live gigs, interesting art exhibitions, alternative perfomances, video art, even theatrial plays. You can enjoy your drink at the bar (weird prices considering the fact it’s self service) although sometimes there are too many hipsters around :) The numerous chess boards along the long wooden table is a funny thing, I wonder how these people can play with all the buzz around at 3.00am! :)

Last time I was there (may 2014) a good friend was participating in a photo exhibition which was dedicated to travel photos, 10 ordinary next door people with passion for travel (they could be VTers!) showed photos from Tanzania, Nepal, Cuba, Bolivia, Patagonia etc.

    Boo!: Boo!

by mindcrime Updated May 9, 2014

Psiri area (opposite Monastiraki at the other side of Ermou street) was famous in late 19th/early 20th century among lower class for the fights and some famous criminals of that era. Later became an area full of taverns but now it’s a popular meeting place for young people as there are dozens of small bars, clubs, small taverns etc It becomes really lively at night when the works go home and the small places open and transform the area into a SOHO like area. But sometimes it’s so busy and noisy that I’m desperate for a quiet place.

In this case I check on the back streets, one evening we went into BOO! Named after the famous Casper (you can see it behind the bar) it is a nice place that is a normal café during the day and turns into a bar later in the evening. There’s always a dj with great tunes on deck (last time I’ve heard some great choices from Africa).

The interior is great with nice small details, there’s wood everywhere but as I said it’s a place to have a drink while you meet with someone for chatting in lazy atmosphere…

    Athenaeum Kelari: Athenaeum Kelari

by mindcrime Written May 7, 2014

Just at the corner from Thiseio metro station is a neoclassical building that houses Athenaeum Politeia. There are some tables outside at the pedestrian street but also inside in different rooms. Never been to Deflis Hall (first floor) or Athinaia Hall (ground floor) where you can have relaxing dinner but one night we visited Athenaeum Kelari (basement). The entrance is from the small yard, we went down the stairs and found a place with was full of wooden tables and only a few empty seats. Service was extremely slow, it took about 40’ till we order our drinks, the funny thing is that she brought them wrong and when later we asked for some tap water too she decided that only 4 (we were 7) deserved one! :)
They have several coctails (6-8euros), wine (4euros), ouzo (3euros), beers etc but also some light dishes, salads etc Usually the drinks come with some peanuts or some tiny snack but again it was a matter of luck to get some...

That night a jazz trio was on stage, Ghost Notes is a beautiful band that plays gypsy jazz, no surprise we heard some covers of Django Reinhardt pieces but also some originals A pretty peaceful night.

    The concerts start at 22.30

    Six (6): All day around

by EviP Updated Aug 12, 2013

    I love Athenian corners
and this may go by unnoticed - yes, maybe because there are other things that people look for on Ermou street, in the centre of Athens...

Still this place can be packed from noon: lunch breaks, coffee breaks, after work drinks and bites, late smooth music and Ermou street all day people watching!

Nice music, quick bites and favourite to artists....
