This is a place where one can listen to authentic greek music with authentic instruments and no amplifiers. So the music is as original as it can be. Of course it would be a lot better to listen to it at a village square on a soft summer night with lots of drink and food around, as it is the custom at the greek village dances. But to have such good quality music in Athens is indeed very good.
The program changes every month and almost every day a new group plays there.
If you want to listen to some traditional music go there, it may not be in the center but it is well worth the effort. Just do not be tempted by the Plaka music restaurants. The music there is bad and just for tourists. And I guess you do not want to be considered one. Do You?
The site is in Greek and so that is not much use to you abroad but you can check it while in Athens and I am sure someone will be able to help with the translation. You can call them too. Just call at night when the place is open. The owner is very friendly and he will tell you the program over the phone!
Oh yes! one important last detail. You can dance there too!
Dress Code: Wear anything you want. The more comfortable the better. If you like to dance put on something light as you will get sweaty no doubt.
when we think of summer cinemas here in Greece immediately smells of jasmine and honeysuckle come to mind basically because that is what you are surrounded with at an open air cinema.
If you happen to be spending any days in Athens in the summer try one of the summer cinemas. There is plenty around. Just check the guides. Directors chairs and tables for your beer or drinks that add to the comfortable atmosphere.
Of course you do not expect the quality of effects, sound and production to be of the utmost quality as in a closed cinema but the pros are so many more than the cons that the latter seem irrelevent. They usually start when it gets dark in Greece which is about 9:00pm and there are two showings. They mostly play older films or they have certain weeks when a particular director is played.
It definitely is a not to be missed experience!
Dress Code: summer light clothes but something to throw over you in case it gets chilly is not a bad idea
The Odeion of Herodes Atticus was built in the 2nd c.AD by Herodes Atticus after whom it has been named. It is a typical Roman theatre with a seating capacity of 5000- 6000. Every summer it is used for music performances and other cultural events, organized by the Athens Festival. One of the best choices for summer nights!
Dress Code: Elegant summer clothes
Multi22 is a restaurant, bar and ethinc bazzar.Every week different kinds of bands, as rock, jazz or ethick playing live. The first floor is an ethnic restaurant with pasta specialities, and the second floor is the bar.
Prices: 12 euro entrance with a drink, at live concerts.
Restaurants: 20-25 euro per person.
Here we are! My favorite venue in Athens for blues/jazz concerts. Live performances daily from October to May.
I had some great moments here watching famous or less famous bands. Every thursday a new band comes and plays for 7 nights. Some of the bands I have seen are:Jellyroll, Vinicio Capossela, Pyeng Threadgill, Big Time Sharah etc
The gigs start at 22:30 and the enrance fee is 20-40 euros (depending on the day and the area where you will be, table near the stage or standing) and you don’t have to buy tickets in advance unless you want to seat in a table so you. have to make a reservation. Most of the times I prefer standing at the bar so to have more space to dance! :)
The interior is nice, with low light, and the sound is great (hopefully). Sometimes, when its too crowdy the voices of the audience is a problem but this has nothing to do with the venue. They have humor though because one night they wrote on the wall (with a projector) "we are sorry if the music distarbs your conversations" lol
check their site for the detailed program or ask me, I go there once per month :)
This is a historic rock club of Athens, many local bands played here many years before so it was a surprise for us when it opened again (autumn 2007).
You can check their site for a detailed programe. Most of the times a local band is playing, some other times blues/rock or metal bands (Joe Bonamassa, Shadow Gallery, Triptykon, Spiritual Beggars) but also some classic rock bands also like Iron Butterfly, Blue Cheer etc
entrance fee is usually15euro (with beer) but for international artists varies. I payed 25 euro for Joe Bonamassa (which was sold out by the way)
Galea bar-restaurant is one of the hottest clubs in Athens with mainstream music and many events like flower power parties on Sundays, tease me please me every Tuesday
Were someone can enjoy dancing until morning dinner at the restaurant or just a cocktail at the bar.
They like to change name here almost every year, I remember the place as NEXT, then UNDERWORLD, then TEXAS, and now SIN CITY, ask me before your visit :)
It used to be a gothic club but since September 2008 is a hard n heavy club that usually has rock/metal concerts until 23:30 and then after midnight turns into a metal club with a dj. Most of the times I go there for a concert, the sound system isnt the best in town but the atmosphere is usually nice with a lot of fans getting crazy about some good music.
It is a small rock venue and can hold up to 400 people and most of the times some underground bands play here or some others that once were big but now just old ones like L.A.GUNS, FLOTSAM N JETSAM, DOKKEN etc
The Thission area is full of late night tavernas not necessarily frequented by the tourists. Our hotel was in this neighborhood. We were surrounded by friendly tavernas and restaurants. After our busy day of sight seeing and walking, Mark and I returned each evening for an evening of relaxing at the tavernas. Most of the bars are opened to the street with confortable couches and chairs to relax on while watching the flow of cars and pedestrians go by. The majority of the people here late at night are local people. The narrow street seems to be filled with a line of traffic driving throught the area. Food is served until late in the evenings. Most of the tavernas are open until the early morning hours and seem to be lively all night. Music can be heard playing from taverna to taverna. One even had a large screen with music video's playing on the street.
The people working at the tavernas here could not have been nicer or friendlier. One evening we left a tip for our waitress. She returned with change telling us we did not leave her that much of a tip. Another evening we spent a lot of time talking with our waitress and joking with her. When it was time to leave she told us to please don't leave a tip. She said you guys were so much fun and I liked serving you. Is it any wonder why I feel in love with the people of Greece.
Formally known as Club 22 (it was located at Vuliagmenis avenue but now it's on Pereus avenue), it is another venue for concerts that can hold up to 900 people. Some people complain about the expensive drinks though but the place is good enough to watch a concert. And it reminds me of Rodon Club that used to be the best rock venue in Athens some years before.
Several bands play here, I have seen The Mission, Einsturzende Neubauten, Anathema, Blackfield, Koop, Moonspell, Fates Warning etc
You can find tickets at the entrance but very often there is a sold out so better buy your ticket in advance from Ticket House (see my general Tips)
If you belong to that specific category of people who like the "Rebetiko music"-sorry, I can not give you a complete description of this kind of Greek music, it is the Greek equivalent of "blues" or "fados"-then: "I Stoa ton Athanaton" (The Immortals' Arcade) is the place to be, in order to enjoy real and live "rebetika" by famous "rebetes" and "rebetisses" singers.A real "Greek night" to remember!
Dress Code: No strict dress code, but try to be properly dressed. And, please, English, Americans and the other "Anglosaxons", wear some nice shoes, no thongs, no flip-flops, it' s desgustive!!!
Open in 1997 gialino music theatre with great services

the performances of great artist like: Elefteria Arvanitaki,
Giannis Kotsiras,TIGER LILLIES and many more.
In the up stage there is live music,

Agyon Anargyron is a street in the Psyrri area of Athens between Platia Agyon Anargyron and Platia Iroon just behind the Monastiraki Metro station and is composed of nothing but cafes and bars, lining both sides of the street. During the day these, if they are open, are just normal laid-back places to stop off for a beer or a light bite but in the evening become the in-place for Athenian night owls. Just about every bar on the strip has live Greek music, ranging from solo singer/guitarists to proper bands and the place is rocking. On the one night that I was taken there every single terrace was full until we reached the last one on the street and the street itself was a mass of people.
The music from every doorway and the chatter made for a great atmosphere with everyone out to enjoy themselves and despite the alcohol being consumed there was no obvious signs of drunkeness, just a general, civilized European buzz.
Dress Code: This is where the guys do their peacock stuff wearing what I assume are the latest fashions and the girls dress sexy!
Typical rock venue, small (up tp 500 packed people) but some of the greatest rock concerts had been here. Noone likes the sound, the view or the air(full of smoke always) but the atmosphere is rock so who cares, I go here to rock! :) There is a small bar that serves alcohol (beer for 3 euro) and water (for free).
Most of the times you can find tickets at the door but for some more famous bands you have to buy in advance from Ticket House or some record stores around Eksarxia district.
What’s more, a lot of underground bands begun from here. I have many nights to remember here, maybe DEAD MOON was the ultimate one back in 1999.
Some of the bands I have seen here are:
Dead Moon, Katatonia, Heaven Shall Burn, Primordial, Saint Vitus, Keehaul, The Great Deceiver, Will O The Wisp etc
