Alli Oxthi-Opposite Shore: Original Folk Music

by sinequanon Updated Apr 4, 2011

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This is a place where one can listen to authentic greek music with authentic instruments and no amplifiers. So the music is as original as it can be. Of course it would be a lot better to listen to it at a village square on a soft summer night with lots of drink and food around, as it is the custom at the greek village dances. But to have such good quality music in Athens is indeed very good.

The program changes every month and almost every day a new group plays there.

If you want to listen to some traditional music go there, it may not be in the center but it is well worth the effort. Just do not be tempted by the Plaka music restaurants. The music there is bad and just for tourists. And I guess you do not want to be considered one. Do You?

The site is in Greek and so that is not much use to you abroad but you can check it while in Athens and I am sure someone will be able to help with the translation. You can call them too. Just call at night when the place is open. The owner is very friendly and he will tell you the program over the phone!

Oh yes! one important last detail. You can dance there too!

Dress Code: Wear anything you want. The more comfortable the better. If you like to dance put on something light as you will get sweaty no doubt.

    Open Air Cinemas

by sinequanon Updated Mar 20, 2006

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

when we think of summer cinemas here in Greece immediately smells of jasmine and honeysuckle come to mind basically because that is what you are surrounded with at an open air cinema.

If you happen to be spending any days in Athens in the summer try one of the summer cinemas. There is plenty around. Just check the guides. Directors chairs and tables for your beer or drinks that add to the comfortable atmosphere.

Of course you do not expect the quality of effects, sound and production to be of the utmost quality as in a closed cinema but the pros are so many more than the cons that the latter seem irrelevent. They usually start when it gets dark in Greece which is about 9:00pm and there are two showings. They mostly play older films or they have certain weeks when a particular director is played.

It definitely is a not to be missed experience!

Dress Code: summer light clothes but something to throw over you in case it gets chilly is not a bad idea

    Nights in Thission

    by littlesam1 Updated Jun 12, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The Thission area is full of late night tavernas not necessarily frequented by the tourists. Our hotel was in this neighborhood. We were surrounded by friendly tavernas and restaurants. After our busy day of sight seeing and walking, Mark and I returned each evening for an evening of relaxing at the tavernas. Most of the bars are opened to the street with confortable couches and chairs to relax on while watching the flow of cars and pedestrians go by. The majority of the people here late at night are local people. The narrow street seems to be filled with a line of traffic driving throught the area. Food is served until late in the evenings. Most of the tavernas are open until the early morning hours and seem to be lively all night. Music can be heard playing from taverna to taverna. One even had a large screen with music video's playing on the street.

The people working at the tavernas here could not have been nicer or friendlier. One evening we left a tip for our waitress. She returned with change telling us we did not leave her that much of a tip. Another evening we spent a lot of time talking with our waitress and joking with her. When it was time to leave she told us to please don't leave a tip. She said you guys were so much fun and I liked serving you. Is it any wonder why I feel in love with the people of Greece.

If you belong to that specific category of people who like the "Rebetiko music"-sorry, I can not give you a complete description of this kind of Greek music, it is the Greek equivalent of "blues" or "fados"-then: "I Stoa ton Athanaton" (The Immortals' Arcade) is the place to be, in order to enjoy real and live "rebetika" by famous "rebetes" and "rebetisses" singers.A real "Greek night" to remember!

Dress Code: No strict dress code, but try to be properly dressed. And, please, English, Americans and the other "Anglosaxons", wear some nice shoes, no thongs, no flip-flops, it' s desgustive!!!

    hundred of theatres!

by mindcrime Updated Jan 27, 2010

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

There are hundreds of theatres in Athens! Its looks like a theatre paradise with so many choices... but!... but!... only a few people go to theatres! Anyway, in case you speak greek there will be a dozen of good choices for you especially in winter period.

But probably you dont speak greek so choose some places like:
-CORONET, where they have alternative perfomances like Prague Black Light Thetare. address:Frinis 11, Pagrati
-BADMINTON, a modern theater for musicals and concerts. In 2009 I saw Tiger Lillies live and Edward Scissorhands(pic 2) check here for upcoming shows:http://www.badmintontheater.gr/ It is located 10' walk from Katehaki metro station.
-LYRIKI SKINI, for opera. address:Akadimias 59, 2' walk from Panepistimio metro station

    cinema

by mindcrime Updated Feb 1, 2010

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Hopefully for you in Greece you can watch all the movies in its original language. So, you can go to any cinema choose a Hollywood movie (or maybe a European film?) and enjoy it. The last years many cinemas had improved the interior, the seats, the sound fx etc The ticket most of the times is around 7 euros.

There are also some multiplex cinemas with many different movies to choose but I never go there. Especially, in summer I prefer the open air cinemas (very typical in Greece). The quality of sound/image isn’t so good but the atmosphere is more relaxing and I like to enjoy the movie while I have my cold beer in my hand and the sky above me… You will stroll around Plaka for sure so here’s a small list of this kind of cinemas around Thisio/Plaka district:
THISION CINEMA. Apostolu Pavlu 7, Tel:2103420864 Entrance fee 7euros.
CINE PSIRI, Sarri 40-44, Psiri (5’ from Thisio station) tel:2103212476 entrance fee:7,5euro
CINE PARIS REFRESH, at Kidathineon street 22.tel:2103222071
ZEFYROS NEW STAR. Troon 36, Thisio, tel:2103462677
At Kolonaki district there is DEKSAMENI, a nice open air cinema at Deksameni square, tel:2103623942

If you walk up and down the basic parallel avenues in the centre(Akadimias/Panepistimiu/Stadiu) you will find many cinemas:
    Elli (Akadimias 64), Odeon Opera (Akadimias 27), Asty(Korai 4), Indeal(Panepistimiu 46),Apollon Cinemax and Attikon Cinemax(Stadiou 19)

And some multiplex if you want to be together with hundreds of teenagers screaming for the new blockbusters:
    STER CINEMA: Aharnon 373 tel:2102371100 subway:Agios Eleytherios
    AELO: Patision 140, tel:2108259975 subway:Victoria
VILLAGE CINEMAS:At the Mall, Andrea Papandreu, subway:Neratziotisa

Agyon Anargyron: Where It All Happens

by johngayton Written Aug 14, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Agyon Anargyron is a street in the Psyrri area of Athens between Platia Agyon Anargyron and Platia Iroon just behind the Monastiraki Metro station and is composed of nothing but cafes and bars, lining both sides of the street. During the day these, if they are open, are just normal laid-back places to stop off for a beer or a light bite but in the evening become the in-place for Athenian night owls. Just about every bar on the strip has live Greek music, ranging from solo singer/guitarists to proper bands and the place is rocking. On the one night that I was taken there every single terrace was full until we reached the last one on the street and the street itself was a mass of people.

The music from every doorway and the chatter made for a great atmosphere with everyone out to enjoy themselves and despite the alcohol being consumed there was no obvious signs of drunkeness, just a general, civilized European buzz.

Dress Code: This is where the guys do their peacock stuff wearing what I assume are the latest fashions and the girls dress sexy!

    new Rigas: Greek Traditional Evening

by babygrand Written Jul 25, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

We booked in for a Traditional Greek Evening, and we got what we paid for in spades!

Food was good, it was traditional enough for those of us wanting to really experience the whole deal, but familiar enough in content to appeal to those who were beginning to wonder about Greek cuisine. There was plenty to eat, and one small wine, or a standard beverage was included.

The truly wonderful part of this was the live dance. Lots of traditional music, the local young people would hop up on stage and dance, then the "entertainment" dancers would put on a show. They must have demonstrated at least six types of traditional dance, all with the appropriate costumes. It was amazing!

Dress Code: I would guess that you would need a shirt on, and shoes, but there were lots of minis, and camisole-type tops, so it's pretty casual.

Dig the shoes! A bit of belly dance Can't get enough of those shoes! The Colour & Life is unbelievable! Local Young people having fun
