OK, make sure to bring sun tan lotion when travelling at any time of year, also make sure you have a map of the city, and a timetable of the underground.
comfortable walking shoes are essential even if you hire a car (which i strongly advise you NOT to do, as the city streets are packed and we saw two car accidents in the two days we were there). If you manage to survive a car trip from your hotel to the city center, you are going to be driving round for hours looking for a place to park anyway. If you come in autumn/winter, pack for cool things and warm things because you can never tell with Greek weather.
If you are going to the museum and acropolis, i suggest taking a digital camera with a few large memory cards. Although there are many shops where you can buy them quite confiniently over there, such as a small electronics shop near the museum and the kiosk at the Acropolis, you will get ripped off for them.
The street's of athens, especialy in the urban trashy parts, are extremely dodgey looking, so make sure you have something where you can store you money safely. Dont trust yourself to be able to notice someone slipping something out of your pocket, because you dont. A money belt which you can strap around your stomach is the safest bit, and if you have a satchel-style bag, make sure the flap is pointing inwards, and make sure all the pockets on your hand-bags are zipped up.

My towel by SirRichard I always take a small towel and a toilet paper roll, just in case. I never did when I used to do organised tours, as U R supposed to go to "proper" hotels that way. But since I travel independent and backpacking I have realized this is a fundamental thing... Leave a Comment

My watch by SirRichard Whenever I travel, I leave at home my everyday watch and use this cheap digital one. Is so cheap that I wouldn't really care losing it. It's waterproof. It'a made of plastic, so it doesn't sound on airport controls. It's got alarm and chronometer... and is light! What else can you ask for? Leave a Comment

My rucksack by SirRichard If I go out for a long weekend or so, I prefer to travel really light, only with a little rucksack. I put my toilet stuff, a little towel, a book, a guidebook, mp3 player, Sketchbook and watercolors, 2 T-shirts and swimmingpool sandals... if I ever need something else, I buy it wherever I go... and in this way I keep it as a souvenir, LOL Leave a Comment

by LolaSanFrancisco Lock it up with a pad lock folks. No joke!
Take some crapy clothes with you. Then replace them with new cool new ones you buy alone the way. Donate you old ones to a hostel.
And of coarse there’s this old one: “Lay out all the clothes you want to take with you. Take out half the clothes and double your money and you should be fine.” Leave a Comment

On the Pnyx by ChrsStrl Whatever you are comfortable with
Good walking shoes and a change of them to give hot feet a rest! A sun hat!
Only what you urgently need and the essentials all travellers carry - good pharmacists abound. Sun cream is a must - but early in the year cold weather gear!
These days, a digital camera is essential to my luggage! Leave a Comment

Athenians like to dress up on the nights out and even during the day. There are a lot of clothing/shoe stores around Syntagma Square. During the day Athenian girls like to wear leather sandals, you can buy them almost in any souvenire shop in Plaka. Tip for girls, in the summer wear a sundress or a skirt and a tank top as opposed to a T-shirt and shorts; it gets really hot and sticky during the day. DO NOT wear flip flops to Acropolis, unless you want to break all of your toes. A hat or a bandana is a MUST for sightseeing in Agora and Acropolis.
You can buy everything in Athens. It gets really sticky during the day so it is a good idea to carry antibacterial moist wipes with you.
Definitely bring a camcoder and a camera that takes good pics at night.
Athens has several good beaches. Bring your swimsuit. Beach towels and umbrellas are cheap in Greece so no need to bring your own.

Roads and slopes can get very slippery when wet-- shoes with a good grip is a must. A tumble down the Acropolis is very unbecoming. :)
A tripod is helpful for amateurs and professionals as many hills and roads in this city offer good panoramic views. Also good for night photography of the Acropolis.
The weather here is quite termperamental. In just 3 and a half days, I've seen everything from a thunderstorm to a clear, completely cloudless day. Bring umbrella for those short bursts of downpours (not sure on this, but they tend to occur throughout the year). Sunglasses are also useful from April right through the summer months as the sun can be quite strong. Sunblock also for those who tan easily. Leave a Comment

Whatever best... by AndyRG Even during the winter, it would be a good idea to have with you not only warm clothes, as the sun can be usually appeared... In the summer, bring with you as less clothes as possible.
A lot of films!
Even if you forget something, you can find it here. The best you can bring is just your best mood, a smile, like these children do (who come from... Morocco, not Greece, but their expansive smile is whatever best)... Leave a Comment
