Melina.....never on Sunday: Deticated to Melina Merkouri
The other day we had a mini VT meeting in Plaka. Just me, Aggeliki and Vassiliki.
Aggeliki had the idea of going to that place...she had been there many times before.
It is a strange place full of paintings and pictures of Melina Merkouri.
Melina Mercouri Café: Historic and delicious
I thought that this café was originally owned by Ms. Mercouri, but instead it is owned by a great admirer who renamed it after her when she died. One of her goals as Minister of Culture was to have the Pantheon marbles, taken by Lord Elgin, returned to Athens and housed in the New Acropolis Museum. Alas, they have not been returned, but the museum was built and opened in 2008. The café is a charming spot in the historic Athens center neighborhood, Plaka and displays lots of photos and memorabilia of Mercouri. And, over the front entrance, is a tribute to her quest, the words, “They Belong Here.” Hard to argue with that.
We had a great Sunday morning breakfast with our friend Carla who lives in Athens. She is a fellow VTer whom we had not met, but agreed to meet for breakfast, after which she walked us through the beautiful old streets of the area. At Carla’s insistence, we started with a Greek Frappe – a delicious cold coffee with milk drink. As a devout hot coffee drinker, I was hesitant, but it was really good. We had ham/cheese/tomato toast which was very good. I don’t think the breakfast was expensive, but can’t quote a price as Carla insisted that we were her guests and refused to let us pay.
