Tou Psara: My Most Favourite Restaurant in Plaka!
If you ask me, 'Where is your favouite Greek Taverna in Plaka?' I would immediately, without hesitation, say, "Psara!"
This is without a doubt, the best, outdoor seated taverna, for my money, in Plaka. The food is always excellent, the service is pleasant, and the view is lovely and quaint.
I have been eating at Psara's since the early 80's, when the parents of the present owners, were still alive. Back then, this place was an old, not so 'upmarket' place, renowned for its 'fish.' Today, 'Psara' has moved with the times, and has been completed redone.
The menue has lovely appetizers, fish and homecooked entries. Anything you try, will be above better.
Favorite Dish: Whatever is fresh, if it is fish; and all the appitizers, especially the potatoes...always freshly cut, not frozen!

Taverna tou Psara: Starters and more starters!
Tou Psarra is located on the upper stages of Plaka, an area not known for its good food. However, this taverna is an exception to the rule that restaurants where tourists eat must be bad. I have been here many times and although it gets many tourists, plenty of Greeks come here too. On a sunny afternoon or balmy evening, the place to be is the laneway between the two houses, watching people stream by. In winter I always liked the house with the balcony and listening to the musicians as the evening went on. Food is simple, filling and good. Although their mains are fine, I always preferred their starters and liked nothing better than gathering a good gang together and ordering enough starters to cover the table, washed down with jugs of the house wine (start with litres, it saves time :-). Everybody digs in and there's rarely anything left on the table at the end. Dolmades, Keftetakia, gigantes, horta, calamari, sausage, zucchini of various kinds, chips etc etc etc. Its all great and the atmosphere is always wonderful. Many happy memories of this place!
Only two words of warning. First, service can be realllllly slow. Second, their coffee is terrible! Go down the flight of stairs and nip into the Melina cafe for really good coffee (its what you should do anyway, nobody has dessert in the same place they have dinner :)
Favorite Dish: Hard to say. They do great crunchy fresh bread, which is a treat. Depending on the time of year, their horta can be really good (think grass, only edible: I know, it took a while to convert me too :-). I'd have to say their Kalamari but really it is combining the varied elements that makes the meal.

Psaras: Half the fun is in finding it!
This restaurant came highly recommended from cab drivers and hotel. Located right in the middle of Plaka, it is a little tricky to find but it's worth the effort.
Ambience is very casual with little tables and chairs in the small, cosy restaurant and outside on the cobbled street underneath big trees and lovely flowering window boxes.
It's always busy, so come early (the Greeks eat quite late), have a drink and people watch.
Favorite Dish: Don't miss the baklava for dessert, so save some room in your tummy

Taverna tou Psara: Awesome food and service!
It's a bit hard to find unless you know where it is, but well worth the hunt. Set close to the foot of the Acropolis. There are tables inside as well as out. If the weather permits, the outside is gorgeous. Tables are set on the stairs and around the entrance. Waiters were english speaking and very helpful with suggestions. The food came out in good time and was great! Compared to the other places we ate while there, they were pretty reasonable with their prices. The fish of course was expensive.
Favorite Dish: I loved the lamb in the ceramic pot! It was so tender and had great flavour. My husband loved the fresh fish that he had chosen and was grilled while we had our appetizers. A few nights later, I had the lamb special, which was just as tender with a different, but just as good, flavour.
TAVERNA TOU PSARA: Dinner at Psara
Psara is a nice tavern with terrace up in Plaka, a bit far from the tourist crowds.
Go early to take a good table, from some you can see Likavitos Hill.
Favorite Dish: Athenian Mezedes
