For such a large city, Athens seems to lack a good selection of Chinese restaurants. However, after a couple of days in the city, Wok 88 (near Syntagma Square) caught my eye and I decided to give it a try.
Effectively, Wok 88 is a fast food joint. Wok 88 is to Chinese restaurants what McDonalds is to a good steak house.
The selection is wide, the service is quick and the food is cheap. But, in this case, the old adage of "you get what you pay for" certainly rings true.
I had chicken wings (2.90 Euros) to start with. They were pretty good, not spectacular, but perfectly edible. For my main I ordered Szechuan Pork (5.50 Euros) and egg fried rice (3.00 Euros). The rice came in a large dish and, again, was pretty good. However, the Szechuan Pork was a bit of a disappointment. The pork was fatty and the vegetables were clearly tinned rather than fresh. The portion was large and it was served piping hot, but the quality was a bit of a let down. But, as I said above, this is a fast food joint and, as such, the quality was no worse than I would have expected at a burger joint or fried chicken joint.
One other negative point is that while "enjoying" my meal, a young girl (no older than 5 or 6, and apparently of Albanian descent) was doing a round of the tables begging for money. If she was unsuccessful she would stand and stare at the diner (which can be pretty off-putting) until they finally succumbed. I don't particularly blame the restaurant for this, but several of the staff saw what she was doing and made no attempt to move her on. While I sympathise with those who are in need, I don't want to be put in a position of having to fend them off while trying to have a meal.
As well as the Syntagma Square branch, other branches are located throughout Athens.
