Travelbookstore as its name suggests is a bookshop specialised in travel guides and maps. it's situated in the center of Athens near the youthful Exarchia and sassy Kolonaki , in the place where stood before the well-known Road travelbookshop. It's a pleasant colourful store full of books that literaly wet the appetite of any traveller! Lonely planet, Rough Guide, Dk, Footprint,Insight,Time out,Michelin, Guide Bleu just to name few, are there! A great plus is the big variety of maps they provide, you can find all the greek publishers and the best publishers from abroad. It's a nice place to hang around, it's totally not one of this massive impersonal bookshops that have been around recently. The staff is really friendly and helpful, really eager to help a traveller trying to find their way around Greece.
What to buy: Everything really, you name it!
What to pay: You can find maps as cheap as 3 euros and guides for less than 10 euros. Even if something is more pricey, they are flexible on discounts
There are several bookstores in Athens, small and big for every taste. The greeks don’t read so much though, we are at the bottom of the list in EU but for those who still didn’t loose it yet for the silly TV there are many choices. I like to go to many of them depending the kind of book I need.

Eleftheroudakis is a six floor book and media shop that will delight even those who know nothing of Greek literature (in part because the book store has a huge collection of foreign language books). The guides are in Greek and English as to where different subjects can be found and many of the sections contain books in both English and Greek. The sixth floor also has an internet café while the mezzanine has a small collection of dvds and cds.
There is a smaller Eleftheroudakis shop on Nikis near the Jewish Museum.
What to buy: Books, of course!
What to pay: Prices for books are about what you would expect to pay in Spain or Portugal.
This 7-storey bookstore in the very center of the city is the largest. Each floor is dedicated to a subject and in the 6th floor there is a café. The books are not only in Greek but in english as well. I spend many hours in the 7th floor: it's the section with the travel guides, maps, atlases etc!
What to buy: There is a great array of books concerning Athens. In the 7th floor you'll find all Athens travel-guides in the market. Useful maps as well. In the 3rd floor, dictionaries of Greek and many other languages as well as Greek-learning methods.
What to pay: A travel guide costs around 15-20 €
A few years before the end of the 20th century, this arcade ("Stoa tou Vivliou") was created at a central point of Athens (Pesmatzoglou 5 street, between Syntagma and Omonia) to satisfy the friends of good books and editions.
It is a nice place with enough bookstores, a historical theater ("Theatro Tehnis"), a place for exhibitions and conferences -which are held there too- and an artistic cafe on the flat roof.
"Eleftheroudakis" is the biggest bookshop of Athens, its main building is located at Panepistimiou 17 street, near Syntagma square. In its 8 floors you can find many foreign language books too. For more details about it, visit the web address "www. books.gr". It is the most expensive, but also the best bookstore in Athens.
Here you can find all new books in various languages and some CDs. But the books in English, mostly come from the UK and are about twice as expensive or more as US books because they have to import their paper from the USA or elsewhere.
