    Media Markt: Media Markt

by mindcrime Written Nov 5, 2015

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The truth is that I prefer small more specialized stores but most people like big stores that have a variety of products. Media Markt is a famous large german chain of stores that sell consumer electronics. Their logan in Germany and many other countries (in translation) is Hey, I’m not stupid but in Greece it is I was not born yesterday!

They have 10 stores in Greece, 6 of them can be found in Athens. As I said I don’t go there often but sometimes they have some great offers but only on specific items (lately I notice lower prices on their site if you buy online but a friend told me they also have different prices from one store to the other which makes no sense).

Anyway, if I had to go there I usually go to the one you see on my photo that is located on Syggrou avenue 340. It’s open Monday to Friday (9.00-21.00) and Saturday (9.00-20.00). Just for the record the left side of the building houses the headquarters of New Democracy(the main right political party in Greece)!

At the beginning (they opened in 2005 I think) they had some great prices (I remember people buying large TVs in big amounts) but the last period they have only some offers here and other (usually what’s on their leaflet is cheaper) but in most cases I can find most products cheaper on other greek online stores

I still like to buy (and listen) vinyl records. I almost hate the small covers of cds and I think they wont exist they next years. Record Companies tried to cut down their cost by set away the vinyls but now that mp3 are everywhere they dont know what to do... Hopefully, small indepented labels still release vinyls...

Anyway, at Monastiraki you can find many stores that sell second hand vinyls and cds. ZAXARIAS is the most famous but there are many more around the small alleys at Ifaistou street (main street when getting out of the metro station) like Mr.Vinylios, 7+7 MUSIC STORE(Ifaistou 22), WX AMAN etc

    ACTION Records(51 Mayromixali& Arahovis str) 60s psychedelic/garage rock etc
ANAZITISI Records(online store), I use to buy some great vinyl rereleases of 70s greek rock bands
ART NOUVEU(23 Solomou stre) psychedelic rock/progressive/jazz
    ART RAT(48 Zoodoxou Pigis str)
BOWEL OF NOISE(George 6, Kannigos sq) extreme metal, death/black/grind
EAT METAL Records(84 Akadimias str) release some albums from heavy/epic/power metal
JUNK(46 Mayromichali str, near Omonoia) experimental, avant garde
    METAL ERA(17 Em.Benaki str) new h.metal cd/vinyl releases
MUSIC CORNER(Panepistimiou 56, near Omonoia) greek, traditional greek, jazz, mostly cds
MUSIC MACHINE(Didotou 16, Eksarcheia) rock, jazz, blues
NO REMORSE(4 Gamveta street, off Em.Benaki) new metal releases and second hand vinyls/cd
RHYTHM Records(74 Em.Benaki str) ska/punk/indie rock but also a lot of stoner/heavy rock vinyl records.
ROCK N ROLL CIRCUS (21 Sina str) mostly jazz, soul, funk
A STRANGE ATTRACTOR(Valtetsiou 31, Eksarcheia) free jazz, psychedelic, electro
    VINYL CITY(Ippokratus 131) second hand from 50s to 80s

If you like big stores that look like super markets and the stuff doesnt care even to say "hello" you could visit Metropolis (Panepistimiou), HMV and Virgin Megastore (Stadiou) but all of them are now closed. Perhaps you can try Public at Syntagma square, not so good prices but convenient location for the average visitor.

    comics: comics

by mindcrime Written May 11, 2014

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

I had a guest from France in may 2014 that is a comic collector so he asked me if there are comic stores in Athens. Although we’re far from being Belgium or France we happen to have plenty of them, most of them located at Excarcheia district (in walking distance from Omonoia metro station), unfortunately during our tour I realized some old ones have been gone forever but there are still some around:
SOLARIS. This is a good one that I use to visit often because they also have some sci-fi books, not only comics, they also have some figures but on the expensive side
BABEL. Zoodoxu Pigis & Lontu 16, Eksarcheia tel:2103825430 very interesting comic bookstore
    TILT. Asklipiou 37, Eksarcheia, tel:2103636028
COMICON. Solonos 128, Eksarcheia tel:2130080255 I completed some of my collections there in the past, they also have some nice figures
COMIC STRIP. Solonos 125, Eksarcheia, tel:2155402852 opposite Comicon
RELAX YOUR SOUL. Solomou 5a, tel:2103844994 Famous for its figures
STAR COMICS. Ag.Ioannou 24, Agia Paraskevi, tel:2106017286 off the beaten path but the experts claim it’s a great comic store focusing on American comics

You can also find comics at major bookstores, Public (Syntagma sq) has a nice collection, Protoporia (Gravias 3) has mainly greek comics, but also in Monastiraki where you can find old issues at the second hand bookstores including old Disney comics etc

They also have silks scarves made only for this shop, and very beautifull handmade luxury umbrellas. There is no staff but the owners are two girls twins and are very hapiness to help you .The main reasons to shop here is the range and the convience of having all exclusive parfumes under one roof.

    Apivita: Greek Natural Cosmetics

by EviP Updated Aug 17, 2013

Apivita is a greek company of cosmetics based on ingriedients from the Greek nature, established by a couple of pharmasists in 1979.

    from the site:
"Its sources of inspiration are: the society and the products of the bee, the rich Greek nature and the holistic approach of Hippocrates. The name `APIVITA` means the life of the bee and it stems from the Latin words APIS (bee) and VITA (life). APIVITA`s name reflects identity and our philosophy for an organized, productive and sustainable development modeled as the society of the bee. Our logo is inspired by the Bees of Malia, a rare piece of Minoan jewelry from the 18th-17th century BC. The two bees, together, form a union, symbolizing fertility and harmony. They are also surrounded by an open circle which represents the lyre of Apollo, symbolizing devotion, sustainable development and belief in ancient Greek culture."

What to buy: All Apivita series meet all skin and age needs, they also make wonderful gifts.

My favourite products are the sunscreens: made with sea levender and propolis, they offer full protection necessary under the Greek Sun and have the natural beautiful smell of the Greek Summer!
Pack the Greek summer home with you!

I also love the Shower/body lotions and the shampoos...

What to pay: about average, there are offer packages all year around

by greekcypriot Updated Aug 11, 2011

The store is stylish and elegant.
You can find the trendiest things ever but they are expensive even during the Sales season.

What you can find here : Accessories, babies' and children's clothes, men's and women's fashionable clothes.
Jewellery, lingerie, women's designer shoes, and men's clothes.

There is a care and restaurant and even Safe deposits.
A tax free shopping service, and a V.I.P Room (Personal Shopping)

What to pay: I found this store interesting but quite expensive for the normal people! Even on the time of the big sales it is still expensive, but it is worth visiting it because it is elegant and stylish.

Can be found anywhere !: "Koulouri" in Athens

by greekcypriot Written Jul 17, 2011

Try "Koulouri" when in Athens. It is very popular!
It costs between 50 to 60 cents a piece and it is of good quality and nutrient.
Ask for soft or hard koulouri depending on what you want to eat.

If you are on a budget, 2 koulouri will fill you up and you will be fine!
I find the best in Ermou street near Hondos.

This is a very big wine, spirits sweets and candies shop. It is on Apollonos street so I used to pass in front of it on my way back to hotel and every day stopped to buy a bottle of beer or wine to taste or some local sweets. The variety is good and prices are affordable.

What to buy: Local wine and beer, among beers I must say mytos was my favourite one.

    4 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

I was passing the other day heading towards Monastiraki.
I came across this beautiful shop that sells all kind of products coming from the beautiful island of Mytiline or Lesvos.

What to buy: It is worth visiting, and most of the products are home made things.
(marmelade, past, cheese, ouzo, spices and herbs, soaps and all kind of other things).

Here you can buy the well known Pitsiladi ouzo which many believe it is one of the best in Greece.
Personally, I don't like it so much, but the shop has many other brands to choose from.

National Archaeological Museum Shop: Shop the museums...

    by shrimp56 Updated Apr 4, 2011

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The shop at the National Archaeological Museum has a lovely range of reproductions of ancient artifacts. And not all are expensive.

What to buy: This little "psi" figurine, named so for its resemblance to the Greek letter of the alphabet, was probably used in religious cult rites. It is about 3 inches high. The orginal dates from 2400-2000 BCE.

What to pay: This one was 22 euro.
