    Agii Theodori (Saint Theordor)
This church was rebuilt in the second half of the 11th century on the foundations of an older church of the 9th century. It was built by Nicolaos Kalomaos who had the Office of Spatharocandidatos (Office in the Byzantine Court).

Agios Ioannis stin kolona (Saint John at the column)
This little 12th century chapel has a Roman column towering over its roof to which it owes its strange name (kolona: column). Saint John the Baptist is thought to be the healer of all sicknesses of the head. Many votive gifts can be seen on the column, offered in thanks for help granted by the saint.

Very near to the monument of Lysikrates. This church was built in the 11th-12th century and stands in the middle of a small palm tree shaded square in the corner of which you can see the ruins of a Roman monument.

This is a small monastery belonging to the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. The church of the monastery, Agii Anarghyroi, dates from the 17th century.

    Agii Isidori
It is a tiny church hidden inside a rock in the middle of Lycavittos Hill. It is built inside a big cave, which the old Athenians called the church of Agios Sidereas. The church was burnt down in 1930 and was rebuilt in 1931.

    Agios Georgios
This is the white church you can see from afar at the top of Lycavittos Hill. You can reach it either on foot or by the funicular. It is said that in ancient time the temple of the Akraios Zeus used to be here. During the Frankish occupation its place was taken by a small chapel of Prophetis Elias which, in turn, gave its place to Agios Georgios the Rider. The exact date of its construction is not known. The bell was a gift from Queen Olga, who had found the church in ruins and taken it under her patronage.

    Panayia Chrysoo-Castriotissa
One of the many churches you can find in Anafiotika. Legend says that when the Turks entered the Acropolis, women and children threw themselves down from the cliffs so as not to be captured. The miraculous icon of Panayia saved them all. Since then the church has been a refuge for women and children in peril.

The 11th and the 12th centuries are said to be the Golden Ages of Athens' Byzantine art. Almost all of the dozen most famous and important Byzantine churches in Athens were built during these two centuries, and owe their origins to the Christian restoration that followed the campaigns of Emperor Basil II in the Balkans.

    Sotira Lykodimou Church
This is the largest medieval structure in Athens. It was built in 1031 as part of a Roman Catholic monastery that survived until 1701. The building was restored by Tsar Alexander II in the 1850s. Since 1852, it has been operating as a Russian Orthodox church.

    Agios Eleftherios (Saint Eleftherios)
This church, also known as Mikri Metropoli (The little cathedral), is located on Plateia Mitropoleos in Plaka next to the large Cathedral of Metropolis. This church has a much more important historical value than its neighbour and was built on the ruins of an ancient temple which was dedicated to the Goddess Eileithyia.
Dedicated to Panayia Gorgoepikoos and Agios Eleftherios. Built at the end of the 12th century.

    Church of Panaghia Kapnikarea
This church is smack in the middle of busy and commercial Ermou street. It was built on the ruins of an ancient temple, dedicated to a female goddess, possibly Athena or Demeter
Dedicated to the Presentation of the Virgin Mary (Eisodia tis Theotokou).
Built in the 11th century, completed in the 13th.

Athens, the Greek capital is situated 5 hours by train from Patras, one of the principal Greek ports, but is only about 250 kilometres from the capital. The reason?: railroads here are a little ancient. The principal station in Athens has only one track route and all trains are diesel, but if you choose this locomotion and you like ancient vehicles you wonīt have problems. Anyway, the trayect can be enjoy and pretty cause as you have many hours to be riding into the train, if youīre sociable, you can meet many friends.
Athens is an amazing city cause cause be caotic besides very nice. In the city where Olimpic Games were born you can visit today the first Modern Olimpic Stadium Plakaīs zone (very interesting), and of course the Acropolis, the most important monumental place in Athens wich is being restaurated.
Ah! Donīt forget wearing a international student card if you have it because the ticket costs 12 euros if you donīt have it. (If you have it, itīs free).
And anything more! Enjoy with ancient cultures, itīs wonderful how they could build those gigant monuments many centuries before Christ.

In the Plaka area on Ermou lies a Byzantine style church, the Church of Theotokos Gorgoepikoos. The interior of the church is a typical Byzantine style church where you can light up a candle and pray at the iconostasis.
