Mitropoli by grkboiler Mitropoli is the largest church in Athens and the seat of the Bishop of Athens. Construction began on Christmas Day in 1842 when King Otto and Queen Amalia laid the cornerstone. It was finished 20 years later under the direction of 3 architects. It was dedicated to the Evangelismos Theotokou (Annunciation of the Virgin) in 1862. The church has been used for coronations, and the weddings and funerals of famous Athenians. The bodies of 2 saints murdered by the Ottoman Turks are located inside, along with some beautiful icons and decorations. The exterior in front of the main entrance is decorated with mosaics. Hours are 6:30am-7pm daily. There is a dress code. No shorts or bare shoulders. Women must wear a skirt that runs past the knees. Men must wear long pants. The little Mitropolis by Pieter11 Right next to the Mitropolis, there is a tiny little church, also called the Little Mitropolis. Itīs a nice and pitturesque chapel, built in the 12th century out of the rests of other buildings. Above the entrance there is an old frieze, made in the 4th century B.C. It used to show the Panathinaic Games, but because christians later places crosses over this frieze, there isnīt hardly anything left of this sculpture. The only remaining sculpture is a scene showing a boat that is being carried, during the procession. In this boat the dress, that was offered to the goddess Athena, was kept. Although there is a part visible, also here is placed a cross over the biggest part of the image. Leave a Comment Address: Mitropoleos Square

Mitropolis Church by AcornMan Scattered around the Plaka and Monastiraki you will find several churches of historical significance. Nearly all the ones I saw had a distinct Byzantine influence, with their characteristic red tile domes, but this one stood out as a bit more unique because of its colored dome and more classical architecture. Just walking around and looking at the many churches in the area is a very interesting way to spend your time, and unlike a lot of things in Athens, it's free! Leave a Comment

Entrance to Saint Gregory's by mikey_e The Armenian Orthodox Church is not exactly well advertised, and that is in part because it is not a touristic attraction. Visitors can come to the offices of the church by appointment, but not for simple siteseeing and picture taking. Nevertheless, the church is tucked away on a quiet street and gives you the opportunity to take a few pictures of the Caucasian-style architecture of the building with its sharply pointed roof, a contrast to the domes of the Greek Orthodox churches. Church of Panaghia Gorgoepikoos by Polly74 The church stands next to the modern Cathedral of Athens. It was constructed at the end of the 12th century, on the ruins of an ancient temple, dedicated to goddess Eileithyia. It was initially called "Little Metropolis", it was dedicated to Panaghia Gorgoepikoos and belonged to the episcopal mansion of Athens. In the 17th century it was referred to as both "Gorgoepikoos" and "Catholicon". In 1841 it housed the public library of Athens and in 1863 it was dedicated to Aghios Eleutherios. The walls of the church are entirely constructed of large, ancient Greek, Roman, early Byzantine marble blocks and relief plaques, without bricks. The reliefs, ninety in total, are mostly used on the upper section of the walls, resulting in a unique, for a Christian church, decoration. The dome is the only part built in the typical cloisonne masonry. Leave a Comment

Agios Eleftherios by mikey_e This church is dwarfed by the much larger Mitropoli (Cathedral) next to which it stands. Nevertheless, this church, also known as the Little Mitropoli, is much older than its larger counterpart and is much more interesting. It was built in the 12th century and is constructed of Pentelic marble with freizes of animals done as bas relief on the outer walls. Agii Anargiri by mikey_e This church is not in the best part of town and, if you go early in the morning, it is best to watch where you step in order to avoid the remains of last night's partying by the homeless men who will likely be sleeping in Eleftherias Square beside the church. When I went my site seeing was accompanied by a man relieving himself in the middle of the square. In any case, the church is open in the late morning for visitors (mass is said earlier in the morning) and the outside has some nice icons that can be photographed.
